If by last year, you mean Prime '11, Intel did have their own booth in between BYOC and PCFP. They had their own computers and ran their own tournaments, for their own game, which they were trying to demo and promote. The prizes were pretty rad, but were totally Intel's doing and not BYOC managed. On the same token, nVidia at Prime '11 did the same thing with BF3. Again, though, not BYOC related.
I personally would love to see a revival of the oldest <insert pc comonpent here> smash fest.
actually I was talking about pax east 2011. Intel sponsored a few tournaments (not sure which ones they were now). Pax enforcers were running those tournaments tho, so it wasn't just an intel thing. Back at east 10 nvidia hosted a huge bad company 2 tournament, and pax ran a few tournaments too, but those didn't have prizes.
I have ideas in mind for new, bringing back awesome, and revising some BYOC contests. Naturally they wont be announced ahead of time :P You will all find out at the event.
It would be nice to know if there are going to be any BF3 tournaments. Sponsors won't pay for a trip if they don't know what's going down.
Although I retired from serious competiive gaming about 6 months ago, as a long time competitive gamer (since 1996) I can tell you from personal experience that getting a sponsor to pay for you to go to a LAN event is pretty tough unless it's a league LAN (like the ESEA playoffs they do in Dallas each season).
I've been to many LANs for official tournaments over the years and while I never played for a team that had a MAJOR sponsor, some of my teammates from previous LANs were playing for teams like Pandemic, Complexity, Area 51, MoB, and so on... Even major sponsors like that didn't want to pay for any expenses for LAN events like pax. It can't hurt to ask, but I doubt it will happen.
The thing is, most LANs aren't for serious competitive gamers. If they cater to comp players, the casual players usually don't have nearly as much fun, and there will always be way more casual players and you can't alienate the majority. PAX always holds some official tournaments which make people like myself happy, because no matter what the prize I enjoy organized competition. Most of the time these tournaments don't get a lot of publicity online because even if there is a prize it's not too big. Sponsors don't want to pay for things like that. If you are lucky they may pay for your BYOC pass, but if you are looking for them to pay for your 3 day pass, hotel, flight, or other expenses don't count on it. Maybe if there was another tournament with a huge cash prize like nvidia/alienware did at pax east 2010 with bad company 2, but I don't see that happening again.
Sorry for the huge message, I'm at work and very bored.
tl;dr
Most sponsors won't pay for you at an event like this.
Artemis is a fantastic game, and I would play the hell out of it. One of my regular crew members is also attending... though we haven't played since 1.3.
How would we do the ship's main screen? And... it might be tricky if crews aren't seated together. I might be over-thinking this, though.
Super psyched about the BYOC this year.... I attended my first PAX east last year and had a blast!
Question, how do you guys feel about registering by yourself vs with a group? I'm currently the only one registered in my group, is it fairly easy to find people to play with?
...might there be a casemod contest this year? Corporate-sponsored, or maybe just BYOC internal?
I'll give a hug to the best case mod. That's prize enough! I demand a hover case! Though, BigRed has all that information. My "Vapok Gives A Hug Casemod Contest" is only sponsored by PC Security. Hehe.
I bought 2 seats. Does this mean I can have no more than 7 AMPs running through and I get access to 4 power jacks? Or am I still limited to 2 Power Jacks?

You get 4 power plugs and 7 amps since you have two seats. Just be sure that your seats are on the same table (duh, I know) and not on the edge of two tables. That way you are on the same power circuit.
I moved all the hardware into the HAF-X and donated the custom case to chrisrays family.
Anyway, have you ever gone to a lan with it? Last pax east was an adventure with this case. We had to pull up out front, drop our PCs at the curb and have someone wait with them while I parked the car, came back around to the front to get the gear, then had to take it to the far side of the BCEC... oh yeah, and they didnt have anything to transport the gear on lol. I HIGHLY recommend getting one of those case straps from geargrip. Depending on how tall you are, you can wheel the case along most of the way with the use of the handle on the strap. If you are too tall tho you will have to carry it, and the strap is a huge help.
Edit:
So I just got word that 4 wheel carts will be allowed for BYOC attendees but with restrictions. Ill post said "cart rules" (I cant believe we have to make cart rules... bleh) tonight with the rest of the PC announcements.
There will be news about PC room announced tonight.
Just a heads up for some more info incoming

I have some extended rants about the stupidity of unions, but that is a topic for a different forum.
Are the 4 wheel carts restricted to certain areas, as in, not allowed on some carpets / etc due to possible damage?
Or are they afraid that peeps might be usin 'em for transporting other peeps / safety concern?

The four wheel cart thing is a union rule. They just don't want people doing work themselves that paid union workers could be doing. However, like BigRed has said, he has managed to work something out to allow BYOC attendees to use 4-wheeled carts and will post the rules regarding some time tonight (remember, BigRed is in Pacific time and it's only 1700 PST).
Attendees can use their own 4 wheeled cart on Floor 0 only. We are required to enforce this due to union rules. They are bending the rules for us to make it easier on you guys since that building is XBOXHUEG
You will not be allowed to use a 4 wheeled car on floors 1 or 2. This only effect people who are bringing their equipment from the Westin. You will either have to carry it from there or use a 2 wheeled handtruck style cart (mentioned earlier in the thread).
Yes that also means BYOC/PC will be on floor 0 in the huge hall area. Specifically where will be announced at a later date.
Naturally all info is subject to change with no notice but, Rest assured, I will rage in your name.

Unknown for this year but last year it was on floor 1 at the front of the building. However that is only relevant if you are getting your 3day pass at willcall. Otherwise it will be mailed to you and you just have to show your badge at the BCEC entrance to get in at any entrance.
I will tell you this: The DivPC trunk weighed almost 200 lbs. No way I am ever doing something that big for a show again unless I have staff.
This year, whatever I build's gotta be portable on a 2-wheel cart.
Do a proton pack casemod. Then you can lug it around on your back.
I still want to see a hover case. It has no wheels, easy to tow, and freakin' full of awesome imho.
Sweet, do you have an insider at the research firm where they keep the experimental anti-grav units? I'll need two, in case the first one malfunctions and devours my house in a quantum gravity containment mishap.

Again this thread is NOT for PC tournaments.
Tournaments will be announced closer to PAX within their own thread.

Same here, seems rather interesting...

My pc is actually the chrisray memorial PC that nvidia raffled off at pax east 2010. Here is a shot of it in the original custom case nvidia used.

also note that it is 2-wheeled, which is allowed in the BCEC (as opposed to 4)
The BCEC has some unique union rules regarding carts. 2 wheel carts are recommended. The cart that zerzhul linked is good, I've used them before.
Vapok
Is this not allowed? Can I get some insight please.
Boston luuurrves it's unions and all their silly rules that go with it.
If it has more than 2 wheels, it's not allowed.
