I tend to agree with you. I think the Dark Force who's on Kuran is the one who interacts with Zio. The Wiki says Zio's possessed, though. I see no evidence in the game to support that theory, but that's what it says. <shrug> Also, yeah. Seth is a bad ass.

Okay... the remix isn't at all impressive. Remember how I got snappy at XoB about chipsets? The music for Generations kinda sounds like, "What if the SNES soundchip was used?" The answer is, "Oh, the music loses its touch." I mean, it almost gets it right, but... it replaces a lot of the techno vibe with big-band horns.
Unfortunately these are the only two songs from Phantasy Star this guy carried over onto a Yamaha chip, or so I can tell so far. But it's still pretty neat stuff. There's other games on his account too.
You see what I mean though, Henroid. All the generations remixes sound like that. The Rise and Fall one is particularly horrible. I think the only one I listened to that was even close to as good as the original was the boss theme, probably only because the original was very light to begin with. And, given the number of times you hear Rise and Fall compared to Death Place, I don't think I could stand playing that remake.
1 fucks up the music, too, but not even nearly as bad. It also manages to not mangle the artwork (Myau is looking awfully....doglike, though). I'd play Generation 1 if it had ever been localized. I'd pass on 2, though.

Yeah, I do. I think the biggest mistake is when you try to restructure the song (Rise and Fall has some of that going on). But it was enough of a mistake that they used different instruments from what was intended. Say what you will about the Sega sound chip, but it was always easy to tell what instrument was intended to be used at any given point.
It's a very, very rare encounter, though. Like, you can walk around there for a while and not even see the thing.
They only spawn with any regularity in one particular dead-end section of the Abyss, if I remember correctly. In that area, you encounter them pretty often. I only remember that because it was a great place to level up prior to going up against the Profound Darkness.

Holy shit, I thought I was the only person who noticed that!
And yes they're excellent for XP, but I think the robots that combine in the Daughter facility are better XP for the effort needed.
I remember the directions being incredibly vague as to where it ran to. I just went to every town on the map until I found it. And then it would run away, sometimes to another town I think. The cake shop is hidden incredibly well, really, and I think there's only one random NPC that ever mentions it.
I was pretty amused to see the cake shop show back up in PSO, again hidden away where nobody could possibly find it. At least any non PCs.

Perhaps something like this would be more appropriate? My favorite parts from PSO all came from the awesome music. Sonic Team did know their audio stuff well.
Edit: I don't think that Generations version of PSII's combat theme was that bad. It still had that kind of synth-orchestra vibe going on.
Also, the problem with that track isn't the chipset. It was purposely rearranged to sound lighter.
SNES can easily do kickass music. Play Megaman X. Speaking of which; that's how you do good remixes. Maverick Hunter X remixes the game's music without ruining it. I kind of like the 16 bit original better, but the remix isn't "bad".
Remixed music sounding weaker and lighter is a pretty common issue in general, though. Check out any PC-98 touhou tunes remixed in the Windows style. They sound pretty bad. In those such cases, it is the different soundset.
This is a little off-topic, but I'm not sure where else to ask. I know someone earlier mentioned Shining Force II, right? That's honest to God, one of my favorite games ever. Do you guys know of any games that are like that? I like the classic, grid-focused, turn-based combat a lot. The closest thing I can really think of would be Disgaea, which I absolutely fucking love, because it allows me (actually, it expects me) to power-level my characters to ridiculous levels.

You mean like Final Fantasy: Tactics?
If you liked Disgaea, you should like La Pucelle. It only requires you to power level if you want to the bonus ending though, otherwise, its not a grindfest. But the option is there. Obviously, the Tactics Ogre Games, too. I liked FFT more, though.
Anyway, PS1 looks really good, considering it came out the same year as Final Fantasy 1.
Here's an imperial stormtrooper demanding to see your papers, please.

I'm actually gonna take a sec to give some credit to PSU, but not a lot, for having some nice music. But, that said, I'm not exactly sure if it really fits the Phantasy Star theme. Raffon Meadow's music definitely fits.
One of my biggest beefs with the PSU setting was dissolving the culture that was running throughout the series. They decided to inject a Japan planet into things and it was really awkward and dumb. Before this shit, the Motavians and Desolizians had architecture and clothing design based on where they happened to live, as opposed to representing major real-world cultures only in zomg space. And the Parmenians (humans) more or less had NO culture, instead having a technological based society. And that was cool as fuck.
Edit - Whoops, I said Japan planet when I meant China.

Err.....what? They have distinctive clothing styles, architecture, religion, and, I presume, their own language.
When it comes to humans in the Phantasy Star series, I really see technology ruling over everything they could do. I mean, you're right, but it still seems to me that "technological advancement" sits in front of everything and that's how they're identified, as far as I'm concerned.

I remember that fight being much, much harder as a kid. Did they tone down the difficulty for Generation 1? Or did I just sort of suck playing this back then?

I believe (but I'm not sure) that they toned down the difficulty.
That said, even though I have played through all of the games a dozen or more times, the first boss fight in the Air Castle in PSIV is still the one that pisses me off the most for whatever reason. I can handle Lassic with few problems, but those fucking wizards piss me off so much.

I think after she left your party you could look in her cabinet, and Chaz would get rather...flustered.

HenroidMexican kicked from Immigration ThreadCentrism is Racism :3Registered Userregular
That's Saya's cabinet, not Alys'. When Chaz looks at Alys' cabinet, he stammers and Alys is just kinda like, "Okay, whatever." When she leaves the party, Chaz doesn't look because it isn't right.

Since the game was re-released on Wiiware just a couple / few years ago, I'll mark this as PSIV spoilers.
That said, "Aeris dies" ain't got shit on this game.
I never actually used the cloning labs very much, maybe once or twice. Its a pretty creepy concept, like transporters in Star Trek. Its no longer the same person, if you think about it. But
You CAN clone Nei before she dies permanently, right? Making it a rather odd, plot convenient change when you can not do so later?
Yeah...that entire plotline is basically stolen straight from PS4. It's way too similar.
Not really.
Final Fantasy has been doing the whole "close companion tragically dies" thing for years. Since Final Fantasy 2, in fact. YEARS before PSIV came out. In fact, the "tragic death of a friend" cliche is done in tons of RPGs, and PSIV definitely wasn't the first.

It's the first one done well. The important thing is that it establishes a character. Like some history, and DEFINITELY personality. PS2 even managed to miss the mark on that big time.

Perhaps, but saying that FFVII stole that plot-line is saying a bit much. Different circumstances and whatnot. The only real connection is that
'the villian kills a female companion to the hero.'
PSIV definitely did set an example for how detailed JRPGs should be in terms of plot and game-play. And honestly, PSIV was the only game in the series with which I could stand the game-play of it (if that makes sense). I guess I was just spoiled by later JRPGs, or something.

It's not that it stole the plotline, it's that it got more credit than it deserved for a half-assed event.
Aeris had zero personality. Everything the other characters said about her didn't apply whatsoever. She was snarky and wasn't always the "I'm here for you" character the others flatly-stated. They were basically lying about who she was. And the circumstances leading up to it were off the mark. People who actually reacted to her dying probably have thin-skin. I realize that's brash and all, but come on.
More screens from PSIV, definitely spoilers (again, just doing this because the digital-release of the game reset the statute of... spoilertations):
If there's one thing PSIV did leagues better than any of its predecessors, and most other RPGs of the day, it's actually create a cast with personality and memorability. Really one of Sega's finest hours during the Genesis era.

Agreed. They set the standards for many JRPGs at the time, and people loved it.

I always did those hunters guild requests the very moment they were available. Way to not play efficiently, Disruptor! <_<
