The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
1)one of the ukranian law enforcement structure was interested in taking control over GSC (translation - they wanted to capture the company and have their money/control their direction). -this seems odd
2)Grigorovich didn't like how STALKER 2 development was going
edit 2: The official tweet saying they are not closing has now been removed! WE are not totally up in the air as to whether it being shut down is true or not; could go either way.

It's been confirmed on Eurogamer that Stalker 2 and GSC are both dead now.
The Stalker series is one of my absolute favorites. It is a tragedy that we wont see a proper sequel now
But I made me realize that we had no idea how it was going to look or play. Because GSC never actually showed anything from the game. So maybe it really was turning out to be a bad game, too far from its roots since it was going to come out on consoles as well. But who knows?

STALKER is perhaps, to me, the most inspirational series of games out there. They did so many things that I think more games should emulate, and I've never spent so many hundreds of hours on a single series of games. This is really, really crappy.
Wow, I've never even heard of Stalker. And it's an RPG?
Depends how you define RPG, really. If you think the most important part of an RPG is adopting a role, then it's one of the most brilliant RPGs out there. If you subscribe to a more classic interpretation of RPG (levels, XP, etc.) then it's one of the most brilliant FPSes out there. Either way, a sad day for PC gaming.

Yeah technically it can be called an FPS. But to be honest, I've always considered it more of an RPG, and it genuinely is more RPG than a lot of other so-called RPG's on the market.
In any case STALKER is a game set around the Chernobyl exculsion zone, where things have gone from bad to worse because now all sorts of weird stuff is happening in the area aside from the radiation. Mutants, spacial and temporal anomalies, and artifacts that seem to defy the laws of physics. The latter has been the cause of people breaking the exclusion zone, and seeking their fortune. These are the "Stalkers".
Being from a smaller Eastern European developer, it was quirky and often buggy, but it was also ambitious and awesomely atmospheric.

No....it really isn't. Its closer to a horror game than an RPG.
Whatever, though. I liked the first one.

All in all, this is a pretty shitty birthday present, Ukraine. I am disappoint.
You know, I rarely get upset when a game is cancelled (except if I am working on it), but this is just.. man. STALKER really is my favourite series of games of all time, and it's because they offer an indescribable something that no one else out there does.

3) - Decided to close the company
edit: looks like "discontent with S2 development" may just be speculation though.

Although that twitter link goes to a non existent page?
Hmmm weird since it works for me. Here's the link to GSC's main twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/gscstalker

Man, Stalker was an awesome series. And probably one of the very few that I'd say is good proof of that you can do an RPG without XP and levelling.

This really fucking sucks.
Man the STALKER series was one of the most atmopheric and awesome bunch of games of the last decade.

First person shooter.

This is seriously the worst

That or make a spiritual sequel in Fukushima.
