Hey guys, my brother is looking to get a wireless connection to our network for his computer. I've never looked into this as I just plug in an ethernet cable into our cable modem. I know he can get a signal, as that's how our PS3 is hooked up, but I'm not sure what he should get to establish such a connection. I've seen USB devices that can do this, but he has to use his internet connection to download and upload large files like 3D modeling and animation pieces. Would such a device be good enough for this?
Sorry, I have very little to no knowledge on such technology.
Well if he needs to be using a lot of bandwidth, then a wired connection is always the best option.
I appreciate that maybe this isn't possible in your situation so i will say I put a $30 Asus PCIe adapter in a desktop PC for a friend not that long ago and it works very well. I'm phone posting so linking is difficult at the moment
I've had very little to do with USB wireless adapters so I can't possibly comment on them
Assuming he can get good signal from the wireless AP from wherever his computer is located, your ISP connection is going to bottleneck uploads to the Internet way before the wifi does. If the signal has to pass through a lot of walls or concrete to get to his computer he's going to have a tougher time of it. I've a tiny USB wifi dongle with no external antenna that does me fine, but my machine has line of sight to the wireless AP. With an internal antenna you cannot do much to position it to get better signal without repositioning the computer itself. Stepping up from that are USB wifi adapters that have a moveable antenna (4-8' wire runs from USB dongle to an antenna) he can move about to obtain better signal. Most PCI/PCIe adapters have an antenna that can be rotated/flipped about or unscrewed and replaced with an antenna on a wire, or a higher gain antenna to deal with poor signal.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better
