Last year, I canceled a flight and have some funds that need to be used before they expire...which is another reason I'm pissed at Southwest Airlines.
However, the main reason I am pissed off at Southwest Airlines, is because they changed a policy this year that allows their customers to give travel funds to other people, like, relatives.
I am taking a one-way flight to Arizona, but have $159.00 in travel funds remaining. I won't be using these funds and Southwest changed their policy so that I cannot transfer my funds to a friend or family member.
Do I have any options or do I have to give Southwest free money for no services rendered?
do they still give you credit if you cancel a flight with them before you use the ticket? it used to be that if you booked with them, but had to change or cancel that would put that money into a credit, probably similar to what you have. if they still do that, you could just buy another ticket for way down the line, and then cancel it, and just keep doing that until you actually need to fly
Southwest said that they changed their policy, because people were selling their...flights...or travel funds...I don't know, whatever. So, Southwest decided to punish everybody, because some people were taking advantage of their transferable voucher/travel funds system.
My only option, according to them, is to allow them to charge me $50 after January 5th - which is when all travel funds/vouchers expire - at which point my remaining travel funds will be rolled into a voucher, which can then be used by someone other than myself.
While I understand your frustration, the fact that Southwest actually gives you your money back to use for future flights makes them unique in the airline industry. Most other airlines simply offer no refunds on economy-class tickets, or insane rebooking fees.
What if you schedule a flight for $159 as far in advance as Southwest will let you, for anywhere in the US? Then, when the date comes close, re-schedule or cancel that flight, and keep doing it until you actually travel somewhere you want?

Yeah, all this. I got charged $200 just to rebook my last flight for a different day. You should be thanking your lucky stars.
Just be glad you didn't go through orbitz. i lost about $300 in their magical mystery tour of incompetency.
$450 ticket originally changed to a $250 ticket, $150 change fee. Orbitz didn't actually make the change, so i had to buy a ticket on Southwest to get where my old round trip ticket had me leaving from (Vegas actually!),and get reimbursed. They said they had to charge me another $150 (It was the airline's policy, according to them) to reimburse me for that ticket. If i knew where the Orbitz main call center was, i would nuke it from space.
Southwest is like a ray of sunshine compared to other airlines.

Yes, it is. And people are telling you so, and you're ignoring them because it's not what you want to hear, which is pretty much par for the course for you. Number of people shocked by this turn of events: 0.
You booked a flight. You canceled the flight. Many airlines would give you nothing. These guys gave you a credit. You took too long to use the credit, a year at least, and they changed their policy and you lose it now. Boohoo.
I will close your thread, but you are no longer allowed to make threads in H/A. This is not "until I stop being annoyed with having to moderate your threads" or "until I forget and notice you making a thread and let it go, like last time" or "until I get bored." This is ever. You are never to make a thread in H/A again. For every thread you make in H/A from now until eternity I shall ban you.
This is not negotiable.
Let me know if I'm not making myself clear enough here.

Apparently, I cannot use travel funds to purchase a gift card. Apparently, they have no other options.

Awesome, Southwest. Good work.
I guess this can be locked. Thanks.

Man haven't you seen Vegas Vacation?
You fly to Vegas, win like five cars on the huge slot machines on the sidewalks, and then drive back with 4 strangers
This is exactly what Southwest had in mind
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
