Emergency: Washing Machine not working.

So I did a dumb thing and left my laundry to the last minute. I have a job interview today.

Before I haul my lazy ass over to the laundromat, I thought I'd ask if anyone here has any ideas.

The washer fills, but won't agitate. I only had five items in the machine and I was doing an "extra low" wash in cold/cold water so it wasn't clogged up or anything.

This is what I've tried so far, to get it to agitate. Every once in awhile it buzzes as though it wants to agitate...and then doesn't. It was working for someone else yesterday with no problems.

- Turned it off and on again.
- Took out the plug and left it for 10 minutes, plugged it back in, turned it on again.
- Ensured that that outlet/circuit was working (it is).
- Plugged it into a different outlet on a different circuit.
- Took all my clothes out and tried all the above again.
- Kicked it.
- Punched it.
- Cried.
- Bargained with God.
- Bargained with fell beasts.

Nothing has worked thus far.

Any other ideas? I don't know the exact model, but it's relatively old and is a "Magic Chef" with 20 pound capacity.

Not knowing the model, it could be something simple like the belt on the drive motor broke, or the motor itself could be shot. Either way you'd need to flip it over and get at the bottom of the machine to find out. And chances are it wouldn't be as quick of a fix as going to the laundromat.

It's probably too late for you to see this, but good luck with your interview.

    Thanks.

    It's not too late.

I went to the laundromat, washed the stuff, and came back to dry it here since I had resumes to print out and showers to take and potential interview questions to google. Plus, my dryer works, so why pay for my stuff to dry at the laundromat?

My agitator problem was because of a small piece of cloth stuck in the pump. See if you can find some Youtube videos of How-Tos on a similar model and see what you can see. It might be as simple as picking out a piece of cloth.

Cause their dryers are super fast and awesome :).

I actually miss going to the laundromat :(.

I'd guess it's just a belt too, personally.

We decided to buy a new one. Or, rather, someone else decided. And is buying it. So...thanks for all the advice and everything. :)

We've been having trouble with it every few months and it's over 20 years old so it's about time now anyway.
