I usually advise playing a game, somehow, somewhere. There are a bunch of things that make more sense in motion than on the page. Encounters can be good for this but it can be very hit or miss. For public D&D-ing you need to realize that the people make all the difference. A group of assholes will make the experience horrible while a bunch of good guys can make it way more fun than what's on the paper.
