Speaking of Mulan, here's a battle scene from the live action movie:

We had Beauty and the Beast in HD as a special event about 6 months ago, and I loved it. Sat up in the booth and watched it. Really excited for it in 3D. Also I think they are releasing Finding Nemo in 3D this summer, which is also exciting

I think Aladdin and Little Mermaid are both on their list of things to make.

And the Lion King managed to stay away from a lot of the gender role/racism problem that a lot of Disney movies struggle with, I think. I mean, there's the "SCAR IS AN EVIL GAY UNCLE WTF DISNEY" thing, but I think that's...not actually a thing.

I feel bad for Mulan for all the hate it gets. The lack of historical doesn't bother me personaly, and having seen it fairly recently, I didn't see the Mongols as particularly horrible. They were bad guys, but they were competent bad guys and didn't seem like racial caricatures, just... bad guys.

Again, I am officially a blind white guy on this one. I was just pleased that Disney was doing something with people of color and treating it more seriously than they did Pocafrickinghontas.

Would it have been better without Eddie Murphy?

  • MugginsMuggins Registered User regular
    No

    Eddie Murphy made that movie

A lot of people were murmmering about Lion King being slightly racist because the hyenas were all minority voices. Also because it was a stolen from the Japanease. But man I don't care. LION KING

Also, I will take your collective word for it that this 3D stuff is good for this movie. When I saw the commercial for BatB3D, I thought it was shitting on my childhood, so I'm glad to hear that it is apparently not doing so.

I don't quite get that. Yeah, the hyenas were people of color... except that Ed is played by Jim Cummings, who, I don't know, doesn't look like a PoC in his IMDB pictures? And Mufasa is voiced by a person of color, as is Simba's mom and Rafiki. The useless comic relief guys are pretty much all white (Timon, Pumbaa, and Zazu), as is the big villain. So while, yes, there are some people of color, and there are some villains, you can't quite say "All the villains are PoC, and the good guys are all white."

I thought they stand out a lot

everyone bows down to the lion because he's born a lion and therefor better than you
gay uncle and mexican hyenas already mentioned
all the female lions sit around waiting for simba to rescue them. seriously there's like 10 of you go kill scar. I remember thinking why aren't they doing anything even when I was a kid
maybe some other stuff I haven't seen it in many years

After seeing the Blu Ray for this more times than I am comfortable admitting I have absolute faith in Disney's ability to re-master this movie.

So you're angry that a movie explicitly stated in the title as being about kings contained class stuff about people bowing down to and respecting the authority of kings?

Honestly never saw Scar as gay, although I appear to be in the minority there. I actually felt bad for Sarafi for having to mate with him while he was king. Where is he set up as gay?

    "you're weird, uncle Scar."
    "You have no idea."

is usually something pointed to, along with his voice and preening. I'm not sure I agree, but whatevs.

    SENSATIONAL news

That seems to presume a lot of stereotypes about gay people though, imo.

Scar wasn't weird because he was gay. He was weird because he was evil, and consorting with hyenas.

I mean it's one thing to point out obvious stuff. Like if a character had a large nose, used yiddish slang, and acted miserly, yeah, you could say that character is meant to portray jews in a negative light, even if the creator claims it wasn't intentional.

but Scar doesn't do any of those types of things. They're just presuming stuff that is stereotypical and ascribing it to him, basically making it up out of whole cloth.

clearly I'm frothing at the mouth over the issue

  • takyristakyris Registered User regular
The problem is that Scar is the classic intellectual villain -- the sinister scheming vizier character who pulls strings to get what he wants. It feels to me like because that type of character was often ALSO made gay in other stories as a primitive and offensive way to show the audience that the character was an evil deviant, the audience now assumes that anyone who is that character type is also gay.

Is Jaffar from Aladdin also gay?

  • Raijin QuickfootRaijin Quickfoot I'm your Huckleberry YOU'RE NO DAISYRegistered User, ClubPA regular
Jaffar totally loves the cock. The whole movie takes place because he is secretly in love with Aladdin and is disappointed in his current lover, Gilbert Godfried.

He wasn't interested in Jasmine except as a way to become sultan.... so, maybe?

Popeye was also gay. His forearms were only that big because he was jacking sailor dick all day long. The fight between him and Bluto was over who got to use Olive Oil as a beard.
