XP Installation: Error Loading Operating System

I haven't really started a thread that's fun for everyone, well, ever, so I figured this would be a good way to do that. Nothing is more fun than OS installation errors, so I'll just, um, make up a problem that could happen that has nothing to do with anything I'm currently experiencing.

Anyway, let's say that there is this guy. This guy is really, really cool. Also, he can beat up sharks. This guy is having some weird Windows XP errors (couldn't make new folders, other random things) and attempts to repair windows with a windows cd and some Run... commands he finds on google. However, the windows CD is busted, so that doesn't work.

He then obtains a new copy of XP from work, backs up all his important data, and attempts to reinstall windows. He puts in the disk, tells the setup to delete the old files in the windows folder and reinstall. It does that, copies over the new files, reboots, gets to the "hit any key to boot from cd..." screen, and waits. Instead of the Windows Setup continuation he deserves to see, he sees some text:

Error Loading Operating system

He attempts it all over again and the same thing happens. He then boots to recovery mode, does a fixboot and a fdisk /mbr, and that doesn't help. He then goes to his BIOS settings, changes his hard disk read mode from "AUTO" to "Large," (according to things he found on his friend's internet), but that does nothing.

He'd flash the BIOS, but his Lanparty nf4 Ultra-D requires some weird BIOS and he can't download it because DFI's site is down.

Any ideas? He really doesn't want to wipe the drive and start over, but is prepared to do that when all else fails. If he does, then he's going to repartition it and stick a Ubuntu installation on there, so it wouldn't be the end of the world. Still, he'd probably lose some game saves that he forgot to back up, so he'd rather avoid it. Plus, he then would have to find someone with the World of Warcraft install CD's again, which was hell last time. HELL.

What would you say to this guy?

P.S. if you help this guy out, he could possibly hypothetically maybe share some VIDEO GAME CHEAT CODES with you, so its in your best interest. For example, did you know there is a code in Contra to have INFINITE LIVES??? It's true!!!

That sounds bizarre, and all I can think to do is reformat, reinstall.
