Given the care with which Blizzard puts into WoW's talent trees and rotations and maths, I believe D3 will be just as carefully tuned to the best of their ability. There will be flaws, bugs, and the like found and they will be carefully patched.
You could do the spreadsheet analysis in WoW, but you didn't have to. The only real rule was spellpower/strength/agility were always better than any rating: crit, haste, whatever. That wasn't true of armor penetration, but that's why they removed it as a stat. And they eventually simplified hit caps.
The one thing Diablo 3 could improve on is accurate damage numbers in spell tooltips. WoW never had that for some reason.
Since their current UI philosophy is "We need to make this as idiot proof as humanly possible, and nothing scares idiots more than numbers and choices," I doubt more detailed tooltips are in the cards. In fact, they said they were redoing all the tooltips to make them simpler.
You'll probably have to go to the new Arreat Summit if you want any real info.
I'm surprised that I got into the beta, given that my bnet account has nothing but a deactivated WoW sub attached to it.
I'm not wild about the new art style, but I can totally see how I'm going to lose hundreds of hours of my life on this. Blizzard....<3
I have the same on my bnet, but no love.
I'd love to get in on the beta still, but blizzard won't hook me up. I played it at PAX two years ago and loved it and it would be nice to see where its come.
Someone put February 2013 as a prediction. Please don't let this person win.
Yo. I put it that late because we know how bad Blizzard is with release dates. With beta passes still being handed out and the developers having mentioned there is still a lot of tweaking to do, I don't see even an announcement date until Q2/Q3. Even if the beta closed right now and Blizzard made an announcement today, the game won't be out before the start of Q2.
Wasn't the lapse between beta close and release for Starcraft 2 really short?
Hell, for WoW it was like 2 weeks.
A quick googling shows that it was nearly 3 months. Release Date announced May 3rd, released July 27th.
Looks like WoW was really short though; just under 3 weeks (19 days; announced Nov 4th, released November 23rd).
That said, they generally seem to give a roughly 2 month lead on their games, looking over the last few WoW expansions (their most common and recent releases).
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!

That is not correct. The SC2 beta ran up till May 31st, was offline for a few weeks, came back online July 7th, and ran until the 19th. Then it was taken down for launch.

Whoops. I misread the statement as "the lapse between *announcement* and release".
Beta and Release is definitely different.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
Announcements being the tie breaker makes them less important. Seems the first date that someone gets eliminated from the pool is February 21st.
Point of order: If I read the rules correctly, it's whoever is closest to the release date, not whoever is closest without going over (err, under, rather) so there won't be an elimination until the 25th.
They need to have like 4-6 different "special" things that you can choose from with CE, so that not everyone will have the same thing... but it will still be "special" compared to all the lower class players.
Examples: Angel wings, Devil wings, unique pets, banners, etc.

I'd been wondering about that but forgot to check. Point taken, well played.

I wonder how many copies of the collector's edition they're going to sell? It'd suck if something as cool as the Angel wing became super commonplace.
Well, Amazon stopped taking pre-orders on it a month or two ago. So I don't think its going to be super common.
Plus I'm sure the price has turned away plenty of people.

I think it's kind of BS you need to buy the CE to get some cool like the angel wings. I don't want any of that other crap, but like hell I'm paying X more for one thing.

Really? It's the wings? The art book and usb drive are always awesome, imo.

The soundtracks are usually "full" and not the few songs out of the game and they'll sell the "full" version later thing. The mousepads are actually useful, the artbooks are above and beyond the rest of the industry as far as CE art books go, in game bonuses are nice and it's cool they've got crossover bonuses for their other games like SCII and D3 giving pets in WoW and D3 giving avatars in SC2 etc. Plus, the "extra" thing like the USB sticks with the old games that are unique are quite cool in of themselves.
I will grant this stuff doesn't warrant the price for many people, but I've never felt let down by a Blizzard CE yet, and I've gotten every single one.
The only tempting part of the CE is the beautiful box, the rest of the stuff is completely uninteresting. Digital download to play minute one is far more enticing than any tchotchke.

They won't be "super commonplace," but I would expect to see them pretty regularly, especially in the first couple of months, if WoW's CEs are anything to go by. Probably 10% or so will have them, but you have to figure that they will be more prevalent early on since a. CE sales are frontloaded over the life of a game and b. people actually buying the CE are more likely to be die-hards and thus will be playing the game more and exposing their characters to more other people.

Well you could be a consumer whore like me and get the digital copy free due to wow to play minute one and still buy the CE for all the extras.
This is what I'm doing. I like that they worked it so you are only really paying for the "extra CE cost" after you register your copy. Means I don't have to worry about release date shipping on the CE since I'll still have the full game at midnight. Then I can add all the other bonuses once my CE arrives from Amazon.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The guy or gal who fronts ~$100 for the game is probably also the type who'll spend hundreds or thousands of hours playing it. I imagine they'll become more rarely seen as the months and years go by, partially due to being a limited number in a growing pool of players, partially as people who have them stop playing or just get bored of the effect.
I'm honestly growing a little concerned that I might have to run all over the god damned place looking for a CE. The US Amazon is apparently sold out, the Canadian Amazon doesn't even have it listed, and local stores either don't take pre-orders for CE's or are already sold out (or don't have it in their system and should be sternly corrected).
Like, I know there are some CE's for big games that still have copies on the shelves years later, but I highly doubt D3 is going to be one of them.
ME3 and D3 were the games that I would actually put down the extra cash for a CE of. The former has been covered already, but I hope the latter isn't too trying to get ahold of.
I have a sneaking suspicion that I might end up calling a whole lot of stores on release day.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!

My experience with Blizzard CEs (at least in the US) is that if you go day 1 to a store known to stock the CE (preferably when the store opens) you shouldn't have a problem getting one. You probably have some wiggle room after that, but it all depends on what the store's allotment is, etc. I don't know about Canada though.
My local walmart had a bunch of Cata CE's for quite awhile afterward. They never put them on sale, but I noticed them for damn near a month after release.
Also my local Best Buy seems to be pretty good about having extra CE's of various games shortly after launch; but with the occasional exception like a banged up Assbro box they usually don't last long.
I'd say best buy is your best bet in regards to picking up a CE without a preorder.
If you can't still pre-order there, yeah. They'll pull their usual "we have to save copies for pre-orders" when you can walk across the street and pick one up just fine (probably).
Most of our Best Buys were out when I went release morning to get... WotLK, I think? I ended up having to go to one nowhere near me since that's where they said there were still two in stock.

My experience was basically the same as forty's when I tried to get the WLK CE; sold out everywhere, and most of those had early morning openings where the CE's flew off the shelves within an hour or two.
Now, the WoW fanbase is pretty ravenous, but I wouldn't be surprised if the D3 fanbase is as bad or worse (especially due to overlap). I didn't try for the SC2 or Cataclysm CE's (didn't pick up the latter at all), so I have no idea how the locals dealt with that.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
I thought I heard (or read) that Blizzard cut off D3 CE preorders, but maybe I'm thinking of ME3.
I just preordered it yesterday at Gamestop, so its still out there.
Also, in regards to Gamestop and saving preorder copies. I worked there for a few years, and the way it worked for collectors editions (at least back then) was we only ever got enough to cover our preorders, and maybe a small amount extra. And they have to hang onto those for ~48 hours before they can release them to sell to whoever/walk ins.

Wait what? Everytime I visited the Diablo 3 CE page on Amazon, it never says anything about it being sold out, just that it was unavailable.
Dammit.

It's not ME3 because this post just reminded me I hadn't pre-ordered the CE yet and I just went to Amazon and did so :P (I like to wait until they offer release date shipping)
