Hello. I have been using IE for a while, but I also use Firefox, depending on what I'm doing. I usually look at webcomics on IE, and do my gaming research on Firefox. When I found out about the Trenches webcomic, I was thrilled, and decided to give it a look. Every time I read my comics for the morning, I save Trenches for last, because it usually forces my IE window to close, saying there was an error. Then, it auto recovers the webpage. So I can view the comic, but only if I allow my browser to close. Anyone have any suggestions as to why this happens?

Trying another browser is a good way to see if the issue is with the browser or your machine.
Usually when IE crashes, it leaves an application error in your computer's event log. Sometimes these errors will point to a particular file that might be causing the problem. It might be that you need to update your version of Java. You might also make sure you're not running any toolbars that might be interfering with the site.
Another thing would be to either reinstall IE8 or upgrade to a newer version.

I dunno what to tell ya. I opened the site up in 8.0.7601 and it loads fine. No errors or crashing. Maybe update to the latest version of IE8 or upgrade to IE9, if you can.
edit -- just a note: trenchescomic.com doesn't depend on Java.
You are going to have to look up the specific error message you are getting. check both system and application event logs.
Also what operating system are you using?
Do me a favor:
In internet explorer click the blue ? next to tools, click about internet explorer.
Click System Info ...
Expand Software Enviroment
Click Windows Error Reporting
Copy the first line that starts with Faulting application iexplore.exe and paste it in the thread.
should look like this:
11/22/2011 8:05 PM Application Error Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 8.0.6001.18702, faulting module mshtml.dll, version 8.0.6001.19154, fault address 0x00067a38.
For kicks if you want to dump your file versons for internet explorer do so as well.
Internet Settings -> Internet exlplorer -> File Versions
Why should I have to use a different browser? Why can't I try to find out why the broswer crashes, like a logical thinking person?
Logical, thinking people don't use IE in the first place.
I kid, I kid. I would say the suggestion of trying IE without add-on/plug-ins is a good one, but looking at trenchescomic.com, nothing is jumping out at me that would even require any plug-ins. I remember a while ago there were some animated ad banners on the main PA site that were causing some people problems, but there aren't even any ads on Trenches. Is there any further information in the error message besides "encounter a problem, needs to close,"
or whatever? I think @skeldare is one the right track - trying it in another browser for testing purposes is the common sense first step. I am going to assume you have already done this since you mention Firefox, and it's only happening in IE? If you can indeed find some sort of log or error file it might help pinpoint the problem. I'm sure someone here could help you locate/interpret it.
There is this cool story about windows XP though. Also I was just attempting to dupe it, I dont particularly care about it. I dont have any updates for IE 8 availible for me to download on this machine.
This will likely be a difficult issue to debug since it could be any of a jillion reasons, as mshtml.dll is interacted with by basically any BHO, add-on, and any number of programs, many of which you might think has no relation to IE.
If you want to find out what's going wrong, install visual studio, attach the debugger, and replicate the issue. This will give you a lot of information, and some forums even have participants who may interpret the results for you (I will not).
Elsewise you could see if there is an appcrash log (not the event log) for IE, which may give you more info.
If you want to try to fix blindly, without trying to figure out what's wrong then: run IE w/out add-ons (and such) and/or in compatibility view, re-register mshtml.dll, run SFC /scannow, uninstall/reinstall IE 8, scan your system for adware/malware, and if those don't work you'll have to start looking into uninstalling programs that were recently installed or rolling back updates to programs (or at least those which after you performed the install/update this problem started happening).
Ran without add-ons, and then went to the "manage add-ons" thing that popped up on the top. Manually disabled all add-ons, in all four sections. Removed the ones they would let me remove.
Restarted computer, tried again. Crashed again, then auto recovered.

No background anti-virus or "internet security" program running.
I will try upgrading my IE9.
To those of you who have attempted to help me probe this problem, and attempt to repair it, thank you for your help. I will update as soon as I have more news.
Also, to those who tell me a logical person would just use another browser:
If you plan on sticking your tails between your legs and hiding every time you encounter a problem, then with all due respect, I humbly suggest to you, "grow some balls". The point my this thread is to overcome challenges by applying logical thought and logical solutions, not to simply run away from it because you do not understand it.
I could just use another browser and say "fuck it", but if I preferred to use a specific browser, and it was giving me problems, MY (faulty) logic dictates that this is a challenge placed in front of me. Why is it malfunctioning, and why is it working in one browser and not in another? Why have my attempts to repair this problem failed? What am I not seeing? Maybe I should contact the person or persons who manage the website, or view the website on a regular basis, and see if anyone shares this problem with me? Oh wait, they're all telling me to just use another browser. I guess I'm dumb for trying to FIX something.
Edit: Upgraded to IE 9 and the problem has been resolved. Thank you to those who suggested this as a fix for the problem. Much appreciated.
If you insist on using an obsolete, flawed browser, which the majority of people have moved on from because of its widely accepted inferiority, as some sort of personal problem-solving challenge or character building exercise, that's your choice, but don't be surprised when people tell you "Just ditch that shit, man" when you encounter problems. ;-)
Maybe I should contact the person or persons who manage the website
Tube's Circus of Bug Reports would have been the place for that, incidentally.
In any case, I'm glad you managed to resolve the problem after a fashion, although I hope you can be satisfied even though you didn't track down the root cause of the issue.
Just going to put it here that the crash is a bug in IE 8. It is simply up to microsoft to fix it, or the site operator not to invoke whatever is causing the crash.
An updated browser is a completely valid solution to the problem, you are a user not a web designer so you have no responsibility in actually fixing the problem.

Good idea, you should be able to get to that from Start> All Program> Accessories>System Tools
At least that's normally where I see the shortcut.

So far from what I can tell it is advertisement related. I see the decideotron ad just fine.
This is the message I get when IE tries to close.
After this initial crash and auto-recovery, it runs fine, I can go to it until I restart my computer.
Tried firefox, it seems to work fine.
apparently Kapersky Anti-virus can cause weird things to happen with IE. do you have that, or some other AV installed?
otherwise, yeah, try running IE with all plug ins disabled and check if the crash happens. alternatively, just install Chrome or Opera?

Or don't use IE at all. The only time I open IE is if something doesn't work right in Chrome.
