Dog possibly swallowed my wedding ring *can be locked*

Dammit, Izzy. I think you swallowed my ring. :(

Anyone ever had this problem? I've searched everywhere I can think of for the ring and one of my last resorts might be mining out my poor dog's stomach. So I have some questions:

Is there any way to make my dog vomit that won't hurt her?

How long would something like a ring take to pass through the body of a roughly 10 pound dog (she's a terrier mutt), if at all?

We are trying to avoid any costly vet visits. Any advice would be appreciated.

Call your vet. I bet they have an answer. When I have questions about my cats, I just call them up and they always are happy to give me quick advice over the phone.

While that is good advice, I'm asking if anyone in the forum has personal experience with this kind of thing.

I know that the vet is there, but if I wanted to call them, I wouldn't have posted here. :D

^ Calling the vet for some free advice would be warranted.

Relax, she'll shit it out eventually. Don't make her throw up, it will slide through fine, my old dog ate all kinds of stuff and just pooped it out. Going to have to mine the shitpiles for a day or two. If she's not pooping on the regular, than you can be concerned and go see a vet.

Why would anyone here have better advice than a veterinarian? It doesn't cost anything to pick up the phone. Or you could take a stranger's advice on how to get a ring out of dog's stomach and possibly endanger its life.

    Esh:

    1. I don't know what timezone you live in, but it's late here. There will be no calling of the vet this evening and I was looking for some kind of quick advice if it existed. In fact, for all you know, maybe someone on this board is a vet that would have answered my question. Never know on here.

    2. I already told you that I understood your advice and I thanked you for it. Yet, you responded in anger and added nothing of substance to the conversation. Your advice was obvious and it has been noted. Unless you've got something new to add, I'm pretty sure you can stop posting in this thread with your shitty attitude. Thanks, buddy.

I'm not angry. Not sure where you got that. I'm just concerned about animals. From all the pet threads I've seen over the years, I've yet to see a vet respond. So there's that. Do you not have any emergency vet clinics where you live? I don't think your dog is going to die if you wait till the morning, but then again, I'm not a vet. Medical advice for people or animals should be left to the professionals.

Good luck though. I'm sure the dog will be fine.

Is the ring smooth or does it have prongs or gems or anything?

If there is anything pointy-ish on the ring you are going to want to be a lot more careful and definitely not do anything without a vets okay or preferably in their presence.

You could get some grass and make your dog eat it, that will induce vomiting in a natural way, or you could just wait one or two days for her first dump.

There is also the possibility that the ring will not come out and your dog ends with Peritonitis.

Is a 10 pound dog big enough to crap out a wedding ring?

The internet says a cap full of hydrogen peroxide will make a dog throw up. I would like to emphasize that that's just what the internet says and I have no knowledge as to the validity of that.

If its smooth let it through. if its rough, call a vet.

Also how positive are you that the dog swallowed it? Did you see it swallow the ring or is this an assumption?

Making a dog throw up over an assumption would seem cruel to me, especially when you can just let it shit it out.

Another vote for calling a vet. If this was a big dog, I'd just wait it out, but with such a small dog I'd be worried about blockages or intestinal damage.

Has your dog eaten random things before? Cause right now this sorta sounds like you just lost your ring somewhere. . .

if it just happened, hydrogen peroxide will make them throw up. its vet approved.

not all dogs vomit from eating grass. my dog eats grass for fun. peroxide works.

just keep an eye on it, as long as its eating, drinking and poopiing, its ok.

My dog threw up *a lot* after he managed to steal almost half a pan of brownies...so go for the brownies method, I think...

No, seriously, don't. Sounds to me, too, like you just lost your ring and don't know where else to look...unless you have further evidence that your dog ate it.

She has eaten strange things before, but I'm starting to think she didn't eat it. She vomited once today and pooped 4 times yesterday (a record!) and nothing has happened. I'll wait another day or two before I worry about it significantly. It's either inside her or in my house somewhere, so there's no use worrying about it at this point unless she starts feeling sick.

I only assume that she ate it because I've literally looked EVERYWHERE in this house. I'm not 100% positive, but that's why the thread title includes "possibly".

Thanks for the help, in any case. You can all put your fears to rest: I'm not down with animal cruelty. I wouldn't make her vomit unless I knew that she swallowed it only then if I knew it wouldn't hurt her. So don't worry, I will not be shaking my dog or putting odd concoctions inside of her. :D

Of course, IANAV. When my dog ate some chocolate (in the form of half a bag of Chips Ahoy cookies), my vet recommended a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide, followed by another in a half hour if vomiting didn't occur. I did that, nothing happened because my dog is too stupid to know when to puke. I would not recommend doing this without advice from your vet, but that's what I was told.
