Coming off the heels of the sexually uncomfortable Ar Tonelico, NIS America announced plans to localize Gust's Atelier Iris 3:Grand Phantasm for the PlayStation 2. The game is currently pegged for a May release.
According to the company, Atelier Iris 3 will feature new designs, characters, and a new story with new gameplay systems that "give players more control and [a more] enjoyable game play experience by featuring the Active Cost Card Battle System and the Symbol Encounter System." in addition NISA promises that the series synthesis item creation system will be "more interesting, creative and challenging" than previous games.
The game will also no longer feature random enemy encounters, with the game instead adopting of a symbol encounter system, which NISA notes will allow players to "visually confirm and engage [enemies]."
“We take great pride in providing a great gaming experience,†said Haru Akenaga, president of NIS America. “We welcome the new direction Atelier Iris 3 is taking with its combination of new game systems, design, and user friendliness; I can't wait to play the U.S. version.â€
We're going to try to hunt down our NISA rep for an interview in the near future on this latest sequel.
Judgeing from this, the game seems a lot les lazy / low budget than Azoth od Destiny was. The location graphics all seem new and the only sprites I recognise are some of the normal enemy battle sprites. Some of you may be interested to know:
The skill gauge now carries over between battles.
The game is mission based.
There is, for all intents and purposes, a job system in place.
Of course I can't get too far ahead of myself looking forward to it seeing as Ar Tonelico doesn't have a date or even official confirmation for Europe yet.

Let's hope they actually give the sprites decent amounts of animation this time around.
Y'know, I never did play the second one. Played (and beat) the first one, then traded it back in cause it wasn't terribly good.
If you watch the trailer, there seems to be more detail to the animation in each frame but no increase to the number of frames. If that makes any sense.
Just watched the trailer and though I can't say that it looks all that different than the past two Atelier Iris games, Atelier Iris + job system = high priority purchase on my part.
Card Battle? Ugh. Hopefully it's not as bad as it sounds. I'll have to watch that video when I get off work.
I played a lot of the first game and mostly enjoyed it (until Makai Kingdom came out and took over my life for a while), but I gave up on the second one pretty quickly. This one will have to give me some really good impressions before I decide to pick it up.

Five minute long Japanese trailer.

You're working on this one, I gather? :P
Explain.
All I've seen is your standard anime chick shot and that one screenie from eToyChest's posts with the girl in the body suit.
