[PATV] Checkpoint: Season 1, Ep. 36 - Exhausted Fantasy
Posts
What about VI? I played it for the first time when I was 20 or so. Seems like it's still good.
I guess when it comes to FF games, nostalgia is a huge factor. The first one I've ever played was IX, and I think it's the best of the entire series. It had this thick fable-like, oniric atmosphere that no other game could achieve. It doesn't even need a remake, since it had the best graphics the original PSX could offer.
I utterly lost it at the line about Chocobos.

They did remake Dragonball Z, Graham.
A remake would be the new Evangelion movies. And in this case they really are a million times better than the series.

Shinji actually comes across as sympathetic, not an annoying whiner!
The last few minutes of 2.0 totally justified my buying a PS3 solely for the Blu-Ray player.
3.0 and Big Bossuka can't come soon enough.

really? I should pop that in tonight, as it's been sitting around since I bought it during christmas shopping.
You won't regret it.

how is it any different than dodging lightning one hundred fucking times in a row?
Usually only see these on new PA comics. Grats Checkpoint!
PS: Falx, I just stole your user icon.
No probs, stole it myself.

You seem to have hit your stride, and are now running briskly, yet easily to the front of the pack, ready to win the marathon in record time.
Blonde Kathleen is just as cute as ever.
You can get Knight of the Round materia in the casino. In the battle pit, specifically. Beat everything. Get paid. Wreck face.
Having said that, I've never even seen KotR. Maybe I should look it up on Youtube?
Pretty much every complaint they levied at FF7 can be said of every other FF game. Except the barbell arms thing, but every early PSX JRPG was experimenting with how to model characters in 3-D since they didn't have the knowledge to make something that looked realistic.
It's not about knowledge. With the hardware in the PSX, it simply wasn't possible to make realistic-looking human characters.
The barbell arms was a design choice.
Maybe?
All I'm saying is perhaps they could have tried a little harder.
(P.S. screenshot from Parasite Eve of PSX)
That's definitely more realistic-looking, but still a bit clunky.
Agreed.
I love Parasite Eve, but the character models in it were very stiff, poorly animated, and felt more like mannequins than anything else, even though it came out full year after FF7. FF7's models, while being "chibi-fied", allowed for better animations, movement, and body language.
Also, I can't believe how good the in-battle character models looked for that time period. This was a time when all other JRPGs were still using sprites, the only other game around that time that dared to use 3-D models was Wild Arms and it went the "chibi" route as well.
Also... while I agree that FF7's plot was very lackluster and generic in many areas, I feel that many of FF7's merits come from its technological achievements. The tech leap from FF6 to FF7 is astounding, prerendered backgrounds, stunning FMV sequences, completely 3D battle sequences and character models, tons of 3D minigames that could have been complete games in their own right, a 3D world map. FF7 did technologically, what no other RPG did before it and I think that helped to really push the immersion and "wow" factor which made the game a hallmark of JRPGs.
"You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should."
And these are all valid reason to not want a remake of FF7. It was impressive for it's time, now it would just be a boring, dorky fantasy game with combat and mini-games we've seen countless times before. If Square wants to catch the FF7 magic they should aspire to be as creative and willing to spend $Texas as they were when they were developing FF7 and create a new game that completely blows modern RPGs out of the water.
True, but you would still have millions of fans buying it because of their love and nostalgia for it.
I agree.
I think this could be done using the FF7 world and characters though, with lots of money put behind it (which companies don't like doing).
To go off on a tangent/rant about the Final Fantasy series development however....
Not ONLY do they have include certain thematic and gameplay mechanics in each entry to retain the title of "Final Fantasy" they also have to develop something that will appeal to Japanese gamers and International/Western gamers (if they want to acquire large international sales.... which they do).
Then ontop of that, they have divisions in the fan base:
The fans of the high fantasy and Tolkienesque themed FF games (1-5, 9)
The fans of the steampunk/sci-fi/magical technology themed FF games (6,7,8,10, and 13)
The fans of the Ivalice/Political conspiracy themed games (FF Tactics, FF12)
While these groups certainly aren't segregated and someone can like multiple entries.... these are the delineations I've seen in the gaming community. People who loved 4, 5, and 9 hated 7, people who loved 12 hated 13, so on and so forth.
My point is the series has contained such vastly different content from game to game that it would take impractical amounts of money + development time + unorthodox/risky design choices.... to make something that would have a chance be universally critically acclaimed and shatter sales records. Which they will NEVER do, because they can make FFXIII-2 and continue to make money.
okay, I have to agree with this statement. I still find myself humming or whistling some of the tunes from the game, from time to time.
I mean, I'm not clamoring for a remake, but please don't act like it's not "worth it" or something. I know the fanbase takes it way too far in praising it, but it's still absolutely my favourite RPG, and somewhere in my top 10 list.
Careful what you wish for. Remember how awesome Chrono Trigger was?
Remember how much more awesome the DS version became when they added fetch quests?
Music and atmosphere, definitely. The plot had a lot of holes in it, sure. But as an environment you remember Midgar, you remember Cosmo Canyon, you know what Shin-Ra, Soldier, and Avalanche mean and hey resonated. It was solidly crafted and designed, even if the writing wasn't really the best.
But then, look at any of the FF games. The writing is not great in any of them. Character designs, music, atmosphere are always over the top and enjoyable, but all of the games have at least one fairly wonky plot hole that could have easily been written differently to make things more cohesive.
Are you saying that making chocobos fuck is a normal thing you can do in lots of games? :P
