The [Web Series] Thread

Lately, I find myself watching more video content off the Internet than anywhere else. It's gotten to the point that I hardly even need basic cable anymore.

I'm not referring to torrents though, but rather exclusive video series found only online. With programs like XBMC and a programmable remote, it's easier than ever to watch web content off my TV (or you could just use an Apple TV).

But I've also found myself scrounging for new stuff to watch while waiting for my favorite series to update. So I decided to make this thread in the hopes that we can share our favorite web series, including a few recommendations I should check out.

I'll start things off with stuff I'm sure most of you are already aware of.

1. Angry Video Game Nerd: http://cinemassacre.com/

James' videos have been less and less frequent lately as he works toward making his big screen movie adaption, but if you're looking for something beyond his archive vids, there are also his movie reviews, cartoon retrospectives, toy reviews, Motherfucker Mike, Monster Madness and everything in-between.

2. Nostalgia Critic: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic

Basically the movie equivalent of AVGN, with a bit more Gilbert Godfrey thrown in (your mileage may vary if that adds to the humor or hampers it). The videos where he digs deep into your nostalgia and reviews movies/cartoons you may have forgotten (or repressed) about are particularly great (Felix the Cat).

3. Plinkett Reviews: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic

Quite possibly the most informative and disturbing reviews of popular pop-culture movies you'll ever find. Also one of the funniest, as I tend to have to pause every 15 minutes before my ribs crack from laughter. Unfortunately his updates are the most sporadic of the bunch, usually taking months in-between. I have not seen nor have much interest in the other videos on his site, either.

4. Giant Bomb: http://www.giantbomb.com/

Can't go wrong with any of Giant Bomb's videos, especially their Quick Looks and Endurance Runs. Problem is there's so much extended content on their site I tend to set myself up for disappointment if a particular video doesn't hit the top notes that they're known for.

5. Pokecapn's Videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/pokecapn#g/a

My favorite Something Awful LP'er, Pokecapn's group videos consisting of Sonic's latest (and worst) games are an absolute riot.

6. Retsupurae: http://www.youtube.com/user/retsupurae#g/u

Similarly, this is my favorite SA group that rips on terrible LP videos, of which there are many to be found and heckled. Sadly, they seem to have taken a break (or given up) on riffing on LPs, and are instead focusing on video walkthroughs of bad games.

7. Retro Game Master/Game Center CX: http://kotaku.com/retro-game-master/

Okay, so this isn't actually an exclusive web series, but seeing how there's no other way to watch them in the US (DVD distribution is in talks), it deserves a spot here. Sort of like the nice guy equivalent of AVGN, Arino is a likeable Japanese gamer who marathons his way through some of the most difficult (usually....he's not very good at games overall) games released in the 8 to 16 bit era. Kotaku hosted a "season's" worth of dubbed (for the host, anyway) episodes on their site. Sadly, it sounds like there isn't going to be a 2nd season, due to several harsh criticisms (out of order episodes, cut moments, poor translations, etc).

The only other site I've found that seems to collect subbed episodes is here: http://www.gamingcx.com/category/gccx though they seem to be out of order as well. Still, there's a good deal of content to sift through.

8. MarbleHornets: http://www.youtube.com/user/MarbleHornets

Lastly, we've got the most (in)famous horror web series that has either taken another hiatus or ended for good (I haven't caught up yet).

It also spawned a successor of sorts with EveryManHybrid: http://www.youtube.com/user/EverymanHYBRID which several attest to being a better series, though I have to catch up on that one too.

That's my list. I'm hoping you can recommend more web shows for me, particularly anything that has to do with:

Comedy

Gaming

Spooky

Anime (something like a Nostalgia Critic equivalent would be great. Anything that isn't a fat neckbeard ogling Anime tits is fine, unless it's actually a parody of that stereotype)

Anything that shows off different parts of the world (one of the things I really liked about MarbleHornets and EveryManHybrid was showing raw footage of places I've never been to. I'd love an equivalent showing off Japan or other countries)

YouTube channels would also be the most preferable, if possible, but please keep in mind this thread is for web series, not one or two funny videos.

My Drunk Kitchen is really funny. Apparently, Julia Child used to do what's in the videos occasionally due to her habit of keeping wine on set, and there was some other prominent chef who would get worryingly shitfaced every episode of his show.

The only ones I always watch are Zero Punctuation and Channel 101.

I used to watch Nirvana the Band the Show, but it's over now. Still, it was wonderful at the time, even if it was focused so locally it might be hard for others to get in to. There are some awesome nerd moments.

If you're going to mention Retsupurae, slowbeef's actual LPs are worth mentioning as well. Where other people make fun of his general ineptitude (in the case of Metroid Prime) or he and Diabeetus mock the hell out of terrible games that he's playing for... some reason (Dead to Rights). Also, watch the Darkseed 2 videos, as they're amazing.

Obligatory mention of The Guild. It's uneven, but at its best is pretty clever/funny. And at worst, Felicia Day is cute.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

Everything was the greatest Channel 101 show for a while.

Somewhat niche and your milage may vary, but SF Debris. Started out as a reviewer of Star Trek episodes, but has since branched out into other Science Fiction shows, and even reviewed Mass Effect 2's story. His jokes tickle my funny bone most of the time, but I find his analysis of story and characters to be the really interesting stuff.

That would Keith Floyd, travelling the world and getting wrecked. It was excellent viewing. He'll be missed.

I saw a couple of the Drunk Kitchen videos and it looks like something I can get behind. I'm just really hoping she is in fact really drunk when making these videos. If I found out it was an act I would lose interest immediately.

Also, Kotaku confirmed today that Retro Game Master has been "cancelled", and that the videos are going to go down soon: http://kotaku.com/5875856/this-could-be-your-last-chance-to-see-retro-game-master

They will undoubtedly remain on YouTube, but there are plenty of fansubbed videos out there. I'm especially interested in the USA special where he plays Robocop.

I love My Drunk Kitchen. She's answered the "are you really getting drunk" question affirmatively several times, if that counts for anything. Plus there are several videos of her doing guest ... things where she doesn't drink; she's still funny.

I am seriously digging Game Center CX/Retro Game Master. True to peoples' claims, the fansubbed episodes are far better than the Kotaku licensed ones, as they show Arino visiting several places in Japan in order to seek out obscure and/or interesting arcade machines. It's precisely the sort of thing I wanted, showing a slice-of-life look at another country. Plus, the host himself is so damn likeable, a real nice guy who goes above and beyond to finish games he clearly lacks skill in. Watch the NInja Gaiden/Ninja Gaiden II episodes and tell me you don't share his pain.

Plus, it turns out SA were the ones to sub most of it, and a few members even show up in the USA episode: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3452856

HIghly recommending this. Also hoping more recommendations pop up in this thread.
