TSA tells teen that her purse is a federal offense
The TSA is at it again. A teen was detained because her purse contained a design of a miniature gun on it.
Sure, the purse is fugly as hell - but that isn't a crime (yet). Did they seriously need to spend more than 10 seconds determining that it wasn't an actual threat? :
When you described it I thought like she had a picture of how to build a gun or blueprints or something in there. And like that would have sort of kinda made sense in the stupid world my brain lives in.
But this is just straight up Dumb.

Here's a good way to stop idiocy: don't bring things that look like guns onto an airplane.
Alternatively, the first fucking amendment
isnt that the second amendment?
Unless the right of the people to express themselves through fashion is magically covered under...
No, silly goose. There's nothing even remotely applicable to the second amendment here. It's not a fucking gun. It's nothing even remotely close to a gun. It's a goddamn purse with an image of a gun on it.
So if I have a folded up piece of paper in my pocket and there's a drawing of a gun on it, am I now carrying concealed?
oh, right, freedom of speech jams. forgot about that one
Yeah the supreme court has been pretty damn liberal with its application of what is considered protected forms of expression. Fashion, art, music, porn. All protected "speech."
But people don't care because they think it's okay to restrict that freedom if it means being safer. They neglect to realize A) It's not okay to do that; This doesn't really make us any safer; and C) Even if that trade-off were ever okay, and even if this did make us safer, it likely would not pass a good cost-benefit analysis.

Not at all applicable. Air travel is not a right.
Really? Pretty sure I have the right to contract with a company to procure their services. Pretty sure that ticket is considered a contract, and pretty sure the TSA is coming in as a government agency and saying that because of how I've expressed myself, they have some ability to prevent me from using said contracted service.

Tox, stick to whining about the Panthers. You have no idea what you are talking about. TSA may be overreacting but no one's rights were trampled on here.
EDIT: And that company you contracted is subject to federal regulations which you agreed being subject to upon procuring their services.

Oh so the contract was executed successfully, and the girl was able to keep her god-awful purse?
”Security checkpoints may be impacted or closed because replica weapons like toy guns, novelty grenades, fake bombs and other items appear similar to the real thing when viewed through an X-ray machine. Checkpoint closures cause significant delays, which can be avoided if passengers don’t bring these items to the airport.”

This sounds pretty reasonable.
Perfectly reasonable!
Detaining a minor because they're carrying something that so obviously is not a weapon, and can easily be determined not to contain a weapon, for long enough that she misses her flight, is not reasonable.
The policy is reasonable, its execution in this instance was not.
yeah if they were looking at it through an xray machine it could easily be mistaken for the real thing, and its not like it takes hours of deliberate investigation for someone to miss a flight while their purse is being checked out

It could also be argued that seeing that might cause a panic if someone from a distance thought it was a real gun.
That's a restriction on free speech the government is allowed to do. i.e. you sure as hell couldn't board an aircraft wearing a shirt that said "I AM A TERRORIST"
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
