My favorite recent political gaffe is "I'm having tacos for dinner."

Look it up, I swear it's worth it, I'm leaving in a minute and don't wanna search for the video.

Those are actually called "Santa hats" and yes, they're one of my favorite cookies.

They are not called Santa hats and I will fight you over this.

Hey I'm sure they'd rather have had a referendum. I mean they would have said no, but I'm sure they would have preferred it.

Black lawmakers in New Jersey have sharply criticized Republican Gov. Chris Christie for comparing a ballot referendum on gay marriage to the civil rights movement thusly: “The fact of the matter is, I think people would have been happy to have a referendum on civil rights rather than fighting and dying in the streets in the South.”
Hahaha. That is some ignorance of history.
    Wh... what?

Listening to local conservative talk radio - the host is berating Secretary of Defense for laughing about not knowing how many wars America is involved in, calling it extremely disrespectful. A caller tells the host that President Bush relating his post-Presidential plans in an old interview was also disrespectful since Bush said he wanted to make a lot of money as a private citizen.

Nutjob Host: "Well, what was the president supposed to say so it'd be respectful to you? Do you want Bush to lie? 'After my presidency, I'm going to spend my time grieving for our fallen soldiers and reflecting on the impact the wars have had on the rest of the world'? That's ridiculous. I'm ... er, I'm not going to talk about this anymore. Next caller."

The host realized midway through his sarcasm that he was fighting a losing battle.

They were out of stock when I made my order.

I also have an Aperture Laboratories coffee mug here at work.

    Delve Deeper is really fun

it would be incredibly easy to translate into a board game

each turn, you first place down a tunnel tile to expand on the map. some are revealed, but most are hidden until the tile is placed (you don't get to see what's on a tile until you've placed it, only where it connects). after that, you move any of your five dwarves to a space: some spaces have gold/gems/mythril you can mine, or a monster, or a relic (worth lots of points). At the end of each turn, any dwarves sharing a tile with a monster (or monsters) will engage in battle. Any dwarves placed on a tile with gold/gems/mythril will gather that resource. Each dwarf can only carry a certain quantity of items, and each type has different carrying capacities, fighting capabilities, and movement values. When a dwarf is carrying treasure, he must return to either the mine entrance, gnome bank (which are found deeper into the caves, but give reduced points), or a relic trader (same as the gnome bank, but for relics). Relics have a variety of values and bonuses; some just increase gold, while others can make your dwarf hardier or stronger. Some reduce your points in trade for good bonuses, and others just reduce gold entirely.

if anybody owns it we should play some multiplayer!

Are there any MMO-type games that have player-driven currencies? I mean like rather than the currency being built in as credits or gold, the currencies are backed by guilds or something. Or maybe there are games where some sort of trade or barter system has emerged? (Diablo comes to mind for this I guess)

EVE probably has the most sophisticated game economy, but it has a game generated currency. The "dragon point" thing that big WoW guilds used to do (still do? (I never did.)) was essentially a currency, although generally only for intra-guild transactions, I think.
