360 keeps disconnecting when streaming

I've tried searching the xbox forums for help but there are so many threads about similar issues with most of them unresolved that I don't really have a clue what can resolve this problem, and I know calling xbox live support will simply result in me wanting to put a bullet in my head. So I'm hoping some of you are familiar enough with this kind of problem and/or with routers to be able to lend some meaningful assistance in resolving this. It is driving us up the fucking wall.

We just recently replaced our old Netgear Rangemax (it kept dropping both the 360 as well as her laptop off the network and we figured it was just old and failing) with a Belkin N600DB. Had some difficulty getting the 360 to connect to it at all initially, but finally figured out that I needed to forward the appropriate ports on the router and got the 360 to connect. The 360 typically stays logged into live just fine if we're playing a game. But if we're streaming Netflix, or if I'm downloading a game demo, it frequently disconnects but has no problem at all reconnecting when we tell it to. Her laptop hasn't had any problem staying connected, it's just the 360. Both the 360 and the laptop are wireless. Based on one thread I was looking at, I tried clearing the cache on the 360 but it changed nothing. It's rather unpredictable and sometimes may go for up to maybe an hour without disconnecting while streaming/downloading if we're lucky. However it's much more typical to have it disconnect every 5-10 minutes. Often even faster than that.

Any suggestions?

Years ago, I spent months figuring out how to stream as many video formats as possible to my Xbox 360, as a cheap way to use my TV as a media player.

It's not really Microsoft's fault, as much as we'd like to say so, since Xbox 360 streaming is 90% done by crazy media programs that are way beyond anyone's control (and 100% of MKV support). What program were you using to stream video? It honestly sounds like a capacity issue--that you don't have enough bandwidth, since it's cutting out during Netflix too.

As I said in the op, this happens when we're streaming Netflix or when I'm downloading game demos. It is not a bandwidth issue. We get a very reliable, rock steady 10Mbps and can stream just fine on our computers. This isn't Netflix stopping the video because it can't download fast enough. This is Xbox Live disconnecting in the middle of streaming and then having to log back into Xbox Live right away. While I appreciate any assistance, I'd also appreciate it if you actually read what I posted so the assistance is actually relevant.

I'm just going to throw out a few ideas:

Which 360 Wireless adapter do you have?

The older version (White, single antenna, A/B/G bands)?

The newer version (Black, dual antennae, A/B/G/N bands)?

Your router is a dual band router. What are each of the frequencies (5ghz, 2.4ghz) set up to broadcast? (For example, on my router, I can set one band to broadcast N, and another to Broadcast G) If you have it set to broadcast mixed, try setting the router to broadcast B or G only (especially if you don't have any devices that take advantage of N). or set the 5ghz band to broadcast N, and the 2.4ghz band to broadcast B or G (instead of "mixed").

You may also need to set up a QoS (Quality of Service) profile to prioritize Xbox traffic over anything else, which it looks like you can do on your router setup page.

I'm also not sure how feasible this is for you, but have you tried seeing if the connection is steady with a wired connection? I'm not suggesting it as a solution to your problem, just a way to do some troubleshooting.

We have the newer, dual antenna adapter.

I just set the 2.4ghz (which is the channel we're currently using for the 360 and her laptop) to G only. If that doesn't solve the problem, I'm guessing the next thing we should try is having the 360 connect to the 5ghz channel and the laptop stay on the 2.4ghz (and of course setting the 5ghz channel to B or G only). Would you agree with that?

I also went into the QoS profile and it just asks for the up and down speeds we get. When I go into advanced settings, there's a dropdown for "profile" but when I click on it the only option is "auto". Underneath that is a dropdown for "bandwidth management" but it's grayed out and I can't select it. Then there's a "classify rules" table but it doesn't look like I can change anything. The only thing in the table I seem to be able to interact with is "view details" in the "online games" row. And that just lists games that are supported.

Since you have the newer adapter for the 360, I'd try setting the 5ghz to "N" only, and have the 360 connect to that, you can leave the 2.4 ghz in B or G mode. If it is a weird signal issue, the 5ghz band isn't nearly as "busy" as the 2.4ghz, has better throughput, and range.

You could also try disabling the 2.4ghz band, or setting it to N only as well. In theory, it should all play nice together, but it isn't always the case. Again, this is mostly for troubleshooting, especially if her laptop doesn't have an N network adapter.

You might also want to try changing the default channel that your router broadcasts on. For example, a lot of devices default to channel 11 or 6. Looking at Belkin's website, your router should automatically detect the channel that has the least amount of traffic on it when you first turn the router on, but this doesn't update itself as needed.

    I'll try that next. Thanks!

I switched the xbox to the 5ghz channel as you suggested, and was able to stream a 22 min episode without any interruption. So far it's looking like your suggestions did the trick. Thank you again for your help!
