Sound dead: no apparent reason

Simply, the sound suddenly stopped working on my desktop.
The headphones i'm using work independently (plugged into a phone), the system volume settings are all correct, the speakers are listed as the default device and windows claims to be sending them information, nothing is muted. In device manager everything seems to be fine. I'm not sure what this could be other than the on board soundcard breaking, but wouldn't device manager pick that up?
I'm slightly at a loss.

Is there a way for me to switch which jack my pc uses for sound output in case its a connection failure in one particular jack?
The Playback Devices option in the sound taskbar icon should let you switch the default. I have headphones in the front jack and speakers in the back and just change the default when I want to change which it outputs to.

I can see jack information there via properties, but i can't control them - merely see what they claim to output.
