So I have a $100 gift card to BestBuy. I look at this as a sort of $100 off coupon since I'm bound to spend more than $100. I don't need any games at the moment, so I'm thinking of getting a new monitor or a new digital camera. First what do you think of this camera, I just need a quality point and shoot. That aside, let's get to the real thing I'm interested in. Monitors.
Right now I have a 17" Samsung SyncMaster 710v. It gets the job done. My dilemma is whether or not to get another 17" monitor and run dual monitors all fancy pants, or get this anybody bored and want to give suggestions? I can't sleep and homework is boring me to death.
I would say just because you have the money doesn't mean you have to buy it. With that said, those are both pretty expensive. You can save a few bucks from buying off of Newegg. This way you can save that $100 Best Buy giftcard for something else.
It's a nice camera if you want a nice small camera. I almost bought it, but then decided to get the Canon Rebel XTi instead. Just a little different. But I got it for a GREAT price (once it gets here - ordered it today).

I've considered getting the Rebel XTi (not at BestBuy). You'll have to let me know how you like it, I hear it's a great introductory D-SLR.
As for cameras, I got a Nikon Coolpix L3 a year ago and love it, I know they have higher versions out and I can only imagine that they would get better.

I just bought the Rebel XTi. It's... can I use the term Cameragasm?
Be aware that the kit lens (if you get one) may have a tendency to underexpose by a stop or two. It's affecting some kits and not others. I got the kit with two lenses and the 18-55mm is indeed a tad dark.
Pick up a Canon 50mm Prime - the f/1.8 should do it - they sell for about 80$ US and it's one of the best investments you'll ever make. If you want to shift back and forth between the manual and autofocus they sell an f/1.4 with the USM as well.

Sorry if I got photogeek on the thread...
No worries there, I'm interested in this. I've been taking more and more photos lately and my current camera is an old digital Kodak DX4530, when I didn't care it was great. But now that I've been actually taking my pictures more seriously, its shortcomings are really showing through. The reason I considered the XTi in the first place was because someone said if I get a new camera step up to an introductory D-SLR. So hearing what you guys have to say about the XTi is nice. I'm going to be studying in Cambridge for 5 weeks this summer and I will definitely need a new camera for the trip, the question is do I remain in the point-shoot small camera family or do I go with something like the XTi that I will get use out of well beyond the trip in my daily photo-taking etc. Cameragasm is a good thing to hear
Hey, the old 4530! I remember that sucker - dark grey body, 5mp, 3x zoom with a lens cap on a string?
Personally I've been through about a dozen digital cameras. I've always been a Canon guy (had the original Canon S100 - the digital camera that sort of launched the "pocket sized digi revolution).
If you're taking a trip to Cambridge (lovely place. I need to go back) it's a tough choice. A pocket digi will be nice simply because you can slide it into a pocket or a pack and no one's the wiser. The Panasonic TZ-2 and 3 are coming out soon - I had a chance to play with a preview build a few months back, they've shaved some of the size and weight while keeping the zoom, (upwards of 10x) the lens quality and the stabilization. It's a great camera that should demo at $349 US (I think, don't quote me). These pocket cameras can make lovely images but they're mostly for creating "I was there" shots.
The XTi, on the other hand, isn't just for preserving memories - it's for making art as well. The camera is as hands on or as hands off as you'd like to be and it's a *great* way to learn, get back into or evolve through photography. It's also a great choice if you want to get into things like HDR imaging.
However, with the XTi, the body is just the start. Some decent glass will go a long way. Really it's about what you need, but it's the way I'd go.
Would you like to hear about our extended warranty? (zing!)
Well now I'm leaning towards picking up the XTi online somewhere (I've seen some good deals), and using the gift card towards a shiny new monitor
And I love what you put for your "location", Threepio. When I went to Celebration III in '05 I was so thrilled they used the "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy" as the quote on the back of the T-shirt, and the Vader figure says "Welcome to Star Wars Celebration III. You will never find....(insert the rest)" Made my trip even more awesome.
The dual monitors are a really cool set up to have, especially if you find that you have tons of stuff open all the time and finding the window you want is a pain or do graphic design and web development projects. But honestly I agree with the other person that you should buy off of Newegg.
Sell your best buy card on e-bay you will be surprised to find you will get like $97 for it leaving you with the cash to get a better deal on something online.
Consider that the amount of $ lost in trading your card is proportionate, and probably LESS, than the amount of $ you would lose for paying taxes on whatever you buy.
Get 20 $5 Gamer gift Cards. Which would eventually net you an extra $100. ($5 coupon on every gamer gift card).
They actually won't let you buy gift cards by using gift cards. I guess it makes sense, but I never thought about it before it happened to me the other day when I was buying a DVD with an in-store credit card and also picked up a gamer's GC. The computer wouldn't let them swipe the in-store credit card with the gamer's GC on the same ticket. They had to ring up the GC as a separate sale so I just paid cash for it instead.
http://dpreview.com/ has great digital camera reviews. Also, don't assume newer is better in digital cameras, squeezing more and more pixels on the same size sensor is not always (often) a good thing.

Wait for the confused stare.
Then ask for $100 worth of Monster cable.
Say you don't like the colour.
Ask if you can sign up for the credit card with the insurance because you want to get the AOL package.
Then say you've changed your mind because you're moving to Yellowknife.
Finally, buy the Gateway. I've got the 21" version of it and it's phenomenal.
(Did I hit all the sore points? )
Here's a good monitor.

Awesome, I'll check out the Nikon models too.

No, don't. They're $20 cheaper through Amazon.
Really.
I just checked because I was going to do the same thing.
I recall something about a price beat policy.
Best Buy beats prices advertised online?
I had no idea.
I actually worked at work on Saturday. Also I went out on a date with a real life girl.
