Load up as me, it's hilarious. I'd be completely screwed if I hadn't basically built up and owned the entire de jeure kingdom

Figured some here might be interested in a A Game of Thrones MOD for Crusader Kings 2. Seems pretty high quality! Just downloaded it myself and going to give it a go.

Couple things from a brief test run (as Doran, obviously):

    1) Castles are huge without a corresponding increase in supply limits. Which makes sieges slooooow.
    2) Mace died after like two years, and Willas stabbed us in the back and joined the rebellion.

Castles also can't be upgraded, though maybe events can occur?

Also Tyrion inherited Tywin in my game

    Also, no boats!

So stupid CK2 tricks. Started with the Duchy of Gwynned, within 75 years, I'll have every Celtic territory + King of England and most of England, and I won a crusade for Jerusalem. Almost won the first one too, for Leon (!!), but it ended before I caught Denmark. Would have had it if it didn't start in the middle of my final war for Wales.

No invite/invade silliness, 4 assassinations, 2 murder plots (to get Scotland). I'm kind of proud.

Granted, it did help that within two years of William conquering England, the Duke of Lancaster/Hereford/Gloucester/York rebelled, captured him, won his war, executed him, and had a son with no sons, leaving me to inherit eventually and causing infinite English civil wars until the Norwegians came in and put things to right twice.

I also get Norway if the current Queen switches to something other than elective.

Sure, we can try that out. I've already got it installed & running.

The only potential issue... is that there is direct, guaranteed player-player conflict from day 1 if we choose major houses. Also, nothing other than Westeros (yet) at least

Not hard, assuming you can remember where to put it (My Documents or Program Files), which I can't.

  • AegisAegis Fear My Dance Overshot Toronto, Landed in OttawaRegistered User regular
Well there isn't really any remembering when the mod's forum page has no install instructions and the zip itself contains a readme that also doesn't include said instructions.

Inside the CKII folder, there is a Mod folder. Just pop what you unzip in that folder and Robert/Bob's your uncle and it should be a choice on the launcher.

(This is for a stand alone install, no idea how to do it on the Steam version.)

    So, a full report:

It seemed to work fine-ish with the four of us. Carrot had some issues and then crashed.

Phyphor was the noble Lord Eddard
jdarksun was as he says Lord Tywin
    Carrot was Lord Jon Arryn
    And I was Prince Doran

Robert's Rebellion was partially successful. With Dorne cautiously and half assedly sort of joining the war, Tywin staying out of it entirely and Mace Tyrell wandering around aimlessly the forces of Hoster Tully, Jon Arryn, and Eddard Stark quickly overran the areas near King's Landing and Robert captured Rhaegar, unfortunately for Robert, one of the Tyrell bannermen killed him soon after, so Stannis was the one who was seated on the Iron Throne when the war ended.

In the meantime, Tywin had betrothed Tyrion to Margaery Tyrell and suddenly Willis, Garlan, and Loras were all dead, leaving her the heir to Highgarden and the Reach. I was trying to get Sam Tarly married to a Sand Snake because I thought it would be funny, but alas it was not to be because Randyll Tarly is a dick. I did have Oberyn engaged to Brienne though, so that was fun. Meanwhile, I needed someone to marry Arienne matrinlineally as she's the heir to Dorne. Initially it looked like the game was going to let me marry her to Arthur Dayne, but while they appear as marriageable, they're not actually allowed to marry. So I scan the list and see that Leo Tyrell is one of the options. Score.

This not being a serious game, it was time to get to work. Doran and Oberyn's intrigue scores are a combined 51, so with him as the spymaster and increasing assassination chances? Easy. After Margaery, the heirs would be Mace's sisters. So they had to go. And then his uncles (Garth the Gross was one of them). And both of Garth's sons. And then Leo's older brother and his dad. Finally I had Leo as the heir and he had a daughter by Arienne. Hooray! But by this time Margaery had turned 17 and had one of Tyrion's kids. For the first time, Oberyn missed. Damn. Then Ned Stark killed him (because Phyphor was amused by things?). So then I tried again on Margaery. Oberyn misses again. She has another son. So I have to kill him. Just before we quit I finally got Margaery, putting Leo Tyrell on the throne and his and Arienne Martell's daughters were the heirs to Highgarden. Dorne finally takes The Reach!

While all this was going on, Stannis died of an illness, leaving his infant son on the Iron Throne. I was the initial regent, and then Tywin and Doran got in a massive fight for the regency. Tywin tried to unseat me twice, I believe. He suceeded on the second try, and then I immediately tried to unseat him (the event fires a tad too frequently). Eventually Phyphor decided to press Catelyn's claim on the Riverlands to unseat her brother. Who had married Asha Greyjoy.

Other notable results: the Boltons were all murdered by various people. Margeary got Roose. Ramsay survived though. Theon died a maimed cripple (and gay apparently). Jon Arryn and Lysa had like seven children, preventing all that silliness. Areo Hotah married Olenna Tyrell because I love her and wanted her in my court. And then she was my spymaster for a while when Oberyn was picked for the Kingsguard.

Anyway, it's amusing, and should be a fun couple weeks while Phyphor's gone. Assuming someone can host it, because obviously he can't. And I can't for computer/connection reasons. So any volunteers?

I still want Dorne. I won't abuse Doran's ridiculous intrigue score this time though.

    Rome's going to be mine.

@jdarksun, we need an IP address so if you could post that before Tuesday, that'd be awesome.

A brief guide to Westeros, as at least Captain Carrot is a non-book/TV reader/viewer:

Westeros is a continent. On this continent there were seven kingdoms. Then a dude with dragons invaded and united them because nothing stands up against dragons. His family is the Targaryens, but all the dragons have since died out. The current King is Aerys, and he's a bit crazy. And a bit of pyromaniac. His son Rhaegar kidnapped the eldest daughter of one of the most powerful families, the Starks. Lord Stark and his son and heir went to King's Landing (the capital) to protest this and Aerys hung the father and burned alive the son. Then he demanded the new Stark heir Eddard and his friend Robert Baratheon, another great Lord, appear before him to swear fealty. Both boys were being tutored by a third great Lord, Jon Arryn. Rather than give the boys up, Arryn raised his banners in rebellion against the King, supporting Robert's (very, very distant/sketchy claim to the throne). Which is where we start.

    Notable (playable) characters!

    The King
Aerys Targaryen: the Mad King. Current King of Westeros. Is kind of crazy! Sits on the Iron Throne.
Aerys' vassals that might be fun:
His son Rhaegar Targaryen: Lord of Dragonstone. Generally awesome dude, except that whole kidnapping thing. The heir to the throne, you start with Lyanna Stark in your dungeon.
Jon Connington: close friend of Rhaegar's and Lord of Griffin's Roost

    Loyalists to the Crown:
Doran Martell (ebum): Lord of Sunspear and Lord Paramount of Dorne. The southernmost and least populated of the seven kingdoms, Dorne is hard to get into, pretty desert-y, and culturally mixed. Think Moorish Spain. The Martells remain loyal because Doran's only sister is married to Rhaegar. Dorne is unique in that they are purely cognatic so the heir is Doran's firstborn, Arianne.
    Notable vassals:
None, really. The books don't focus on Dorne too much, and the TV show hasn't gotten there at all as of yet.

Mace Tyrell: Lord of Highgarden and Lord Paramount of the Reach. The second richest of the high lords. Mace is pretty mediocre in all respects. His mother is the real power in Highgarden. He does have three sons and a daughter for alliance purposes.
    Notable vassals:
Randyll Tarly: Lord of Horn Hill. Probably the realm's greatest tactician (represented here by a whopping 30 martial score, I believe). His only son, Samwell, is a great disappointment and coward.

    The Rebels:
Robert Baratheon: Lord of Storm's End and Lord Paramount of the Stormlands. A fearsome individual fighter and betrothed to Lyanna Stark. Kind of obsessed with her, honestly. Of the rebel lords, he's the only one with a distant claim to the Iron Throne. Likes drinking and whoring kind of a lot. Utterly disinterested in actually ruling.
Robert's interesting vassals: None, I think. Stannis (his brother and heir for the moment) I don't think starts with any land.

Jon Arryn: Lord of the Eyrie and Lord Paramount of the Vale of Arryn. Robert and Eddard's surrogate father. Highly respected. Married to Lysa Tully, who is a bit crazy.
Jon's interesting vassals: Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - a minor lord who's kind of pissed about it. Brilliant, schemer, loves Catelyn Tully.

Hoster Tully: Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Father by marriage to both the Starks and Arryns, he joins the war effort.
Hoster's interesting vassals: Walder Frey - Lord of the Twins. an old, careful man with a ton of children who wants to get them all married to useful people. Kind of annoyed Lord Tully didn't give him either of his daughters or his son.
Jason Mallister - Lord of Seagard. I don't find him that awesome, but shalmelo does. He's a pretty good fighter and highly respected.

Eddard Stark: Lord of Winterfell and Lord Paramount of the North. Young and a second son who never expected Winterfell to fall to him. He's a good dude, a skilled fighter, and utterly clueless about subtlety and intrigue. Married to Catelyn Tully. Robert Baratheon's closest friend and ally.
Eddard's interesting vassals: Roose Bolton - Lord of the Dreadfort. The Boltons have been fighting the Starks forever for the North. The Starks tend to come out on top, but wars are frequent. Roose himself is amoral and deceitful (super high intrigue score).
Howland Reed - Lord of Greywater Watch. Responsible for protecting the one and only way into the North. Is a weird, mystical dude from a weird, suspicious people, the crannogmen.
(Great)Jon Umber - Lord of Last Hearth. Huuuuuge dude. One of the most powerful of Stark's vassals. Is awesome.
Wyman Manderly - Lord of White Harbor. Faaaaaaat dude. White Harbor is the largest city in the North, and the third largest in Westeros. He's also got the biggest fleet in the North, though I think that's not represented here.

    Neutral Opportunists
Tywin Lannister: Lord of Casterly Rock and Lord Paramount of the West. Very highly respected, he served as Aerys' main advisor for twenty years before they had a falling out. He's also the Lord of the region with the most money because there are large gold mines in the West. His eldest children Jaime and Cersei are twins and um... love each other a whole lot. Jaime is no longer in the line of succession because he has joined the Kingsguard (an order of knights dedicated to protecting the King). Therefore Tywin's younger son, Tyrion, is the heir to Casterly Rock. Tyrion is a dwarf, and his mother died giving birth to him, so he's not terribly popular with either of his siblings or Tywin.
Notable vassals - none really, unless you want to play as the people Tywin entirely wipes out for daring to rebel against him between this war and the start of the book series. That would be the Castameres.

Balon Greyjoy: Lord of Pyke and would be King of the Iron Islands. They're Vikings who worship Cthulu. Well not quite, but whatever. Close enough.
Notable vassals: Roedrick the Reader - Lord of Ten Towers. He's an intellectual Viking. Come on, that's awesome.

On the theme of 'How the hell do we play CK"' I just spent the evening learning it a little and the best advice I can give to anyone new is to watch that video above, and play a game as a tiny one or two county ruler. It makes everything so much more straightforward when you can see each decision having a massive effect on your tiny bit of land. Plus it's fun to amass gold then go on the rampage with a bunch of mercenaries.

Ugh. I really want to get in on some vicious Westeros action, but I won't be able to play either session this week. I've had another hockey game get moved to Tuesday, and Thursday I'm taking my wife out to dinner for her birthday (her birthday is technically Friday, but I'm flying out of town Friday morning and will be gone all weekend, so Thursday it is).

We'll see how things shake out. Maybe I'll take a look at the save after Thursday and can pick some lord to hop in with for next week, or maybe I'll just join up again once Phyphor's back and we head back to Europe.

Welp, I just finished my first game. I played as the king of Leon, and at one point even conquered all of the Iberian peninsula. Right before 1300, my beloved king suddenly died, and his cathar daughter took charge. As you can imagine, things went downhill from there. Her uncle claimed the throne and basically kicked her out. She went to war several times, and came close to winning over the kingdom, but then he would summon holy order armies to come to his rescue. By the time she died, most of her land was taken away by the king. Her (catholic) made one last fatal attempt to retake the throne, but sadly, he was crushed fairly easily. He died in a prison cell with no heirs.

Most important lesson I learned: patience is not as important as a king, but it is essential as a duke.

Can't wait to start another game. I started this first one before any patches came out, so I'm interested how the balance will change. Any suggestions of interesting dukedoms or lesser kingdoms I could play? I don't want anything too easy.
