The cleaning of carpets

I was thinking about renting one of those rug doctor thingamajiggies to clean the carpet in my apartment. Question is that I have a couple bookcases bolted to the wall, they're semi-cheapo Ikea particle board bookcases so I was worried that the carpet will get too wet and they'll soak up the water and fall apart.
Has anyone had any experience using a carpet cleaning machine around these kinds of bookcases? Also, I've got a king size bed, couch, and entertainment center that I'll need to prop up on something. I thought I remembered my mom using several pieces of aluminum foil when i was a wee lad to keep the wood feet from getting damp. Is there something else more recommended to use for this nowadays?
