Finding the right backpack

I've had a backpack for many years now and it's starting to wear out so I need to get a new one. I would like to get a backpack that can also fit my Dell Studio 17" laptop. I can find plenty of 17" laptop backpacks online, but I know that sometimes depending on the laptop they may or may not actually fit. I am also a student at a university where I walk to class a lot and I carry many textbooks/spirals with me. So my ultimate question is if anyone knows of a spacious laptop backpack that can comfortably fit a 17" laptop, and would be comfortable. Thanks!
P.S. I would like something a little affordable for a college student with a slightly above minimum wage job.

You specifically want a backpack or is a messenger bag ok?
I'd go with Chrome's largest size and a sleeve for the laptop. Life warranty and built to last.

I was looking more for a backpack because I usually also ride a bike, though the stabilize strap is nice. The bag is extremely sexy, but I was also looking for something a little more affordable, I should have mentioned that so I'll edit it into my post. Thanks though

Yeah, but consider the $160 an investment. And the stabilizing strap works great. Also SECRET POCKET.

Hmm, secret pocket, I could store..... secretive things there.

I know it's a bit , but I have had one I bought at an apple store since 2003.
This thing has seen five continents, a war zone, driving across africa, lots and lots of airplanes, third world buses and taxis.
It looks practically brand new and outlived every single piece of luggage ever owned.

Hm, that backpack does seem pretty killer, and it would be tough enough in case I did fall. Is it very spacious outside of the laptop area?
I have carried two laptops (one in the sleeve, one outside) before in it, and often carried hard back books in there with just my normal laptop. Carrying a change of clothes (jeans, shirt, underwear) and laptop and book got a bit tight.
What's the difference between a backpack and a "laptop backpack"?
They generally have built-in padded sleeves.
Seems like a waste. Why not just get a laptop sleeve and then you can use whatever backpack you want? Then you can also use the laptop sleeve when you don't need it in a backpack?
Everyday I wake up is the worst day of my life.

Eh, usually the price winds up being a little more, however I do see your point.
I used a standard military issue backpack which are usually 50-100 and a 20 dollar laptop sleeve/messenger bag thing for 6 years, including two deployments and numerous cross country trips. I replaced the cheap plastic buckles on the sleeve that connected the sleeve to the shoulder strap with the metal carabeners (Sp?) people hand out to advertise shit and haven't had any other problems since.
To each their own though, like I said, that one backpack linked looks like some high-quality stuff and I don't doubt it'd fit your criteria.
This backpack is usually highly recommended when it comes to storing a 17" laptop, it is made for ASUS gaming laptops (which are massive), so I have no doubt it'll fit your Dell. It has just enough space to store 1 (maybe 2) textbooks and a couple of spirals.

Speaking of ASUS's 17" laptops (and 17" laptops in general), there was actually a thread with somebody asking about a bag for them not that long ago that might be helpful to you. Finding something that will fit a 17" laptop can be a huuuge pain (I have personal experience with this), so best of luck to you!
I linked this in the thread that Essee just posted a link to but I'll put it here. I have a 17" Dell XPS, it's a monster and fits quite easily into the laptop compartment of this backpack, with plenty of room to put other stuff in there too. It's even on sale right now!
I use it for school and it's pretty comfortable to carry around with my books and stuff in there. I don't really carry it around much with the laptop and other stuff inside but like I said, my laptop is a monster and it+the charger weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 15lbs, so having that with other stuff on my back for long periods of time sucks. If I'm not mistaken the Studio laptops are much more reasonably sized so this shouldn't be a problem for you.
I'm picky about bags and I love shopping for them. I've used a variety of Timbuk2 messengers and other backpacks. The best student/laptop bag I've used is the North Face Surge.
Around $90, maybe less if you find a sale. Look around for last years model as they are usually cheaper and identical. This bag is large enough for serious books, as a serious backpack. I've owned mine for 5 years, used it daily, and during camping. It's held up great. My girlfriend liked it so much when we started dating she bought one for herself. It's comfortable to wear, holds enough, but it's not TOO big. Comfortable on a bike, too. It has nice touches with the pockets organization and a unique pocket for the power cord, which is very handy. It's good in rain, so you won't have to worry about your stuff.
Give it a look, because I think it will work perfectly for you.

cheaperthandirt.com has a pretty good backpack I've seen used and it's not too expensive.

Yeah, it's not actually advertised, but it's this unnoticeable velcro opening along one of the side seams. It's only on the largest size though.

If you want to make sure you have enough space, then go with this, plenty of compartments and space.

Alternately, there's also this route:
