ya, my bad for the weird segue, can see how it could get confusing, I just always considered Secret War as Secret Wars 3, ( even tho subverted the whole secret wars gladiator thing, I'm just simple and it matches the name for the most part, so that's where my brain sorts it heh)
I stand by my view on re-reading Secret Wars 2 would be a lot better if not for the 8-10 " Oh man, these were written in the 90's" panels that jump directly in your face when you re-read them.
Marvel seems to think cc is a big hit. They're always advertising for it and how awesome it was so buy the trade people please dear god why won't you buy the trade it's just a little money and we could really use it :weeping:
I'll be buying the trade simply because it is an important story and thus I want it.
What a good little consumer!
Sorry dude. When I watch TV shows I watch the bad episodes too.
I was getting into comics right when Dissasembled and House of M were things so not having a key story in the whole Scarlet Witch saga is something my completionist mentality won't accept.

The thing is, it's not an important story. It's a story that was supposed to be important, but it was delayed so much it never had any impact and pulled a common go-to badguy out to place the blame on in the end when it made no sense given his actions at that time. It's the equivalent of Sony making the mini-disc players when everyone moved on to MP3 players
Like when I go back and read Spider-Man stuff, I read One More Day along with it.
I don't skip things much. I don't just read the best issues and arcs. I had to stop buying monthlies because I was getting like 3/4s of the line and couldn't afford it.
I kind of understand that mentality, except I don't purchase arcs that aren't good I just borrow them off someone or read them in the library or something.
Anyway reading it now and Iron Man and Captain America are coming across as total jerk-offs. Especially Iron Man. From the very little Marvel stuff I've read I think I just hate that guy.
I wasn't huge on the first two issues but it's growing on me. I just thought about the plot and I think at a fundamental level it's about not wanting to grow up, which is pretty cool.
If you want to understand the appeal of Iron Man, you should read Fraction's run on the character. It's pretty definitive in my opinion.

The Heroes Return run (Busiek/Quesada/Grell) was also quite good, I don't know if they ever finished collecting it or putting it up on comixology. Tony's actually had a surprisingly good string of writers on his book, it's just that he never gets the time to shine unless he's the bad guy (Crossing, Civil War). Iron Man will always come across as a jerk when on the same team as Cap, basically because it's easy for him to be the fallguy with his less than stellar moral compass. It's one of the reasons why I think they work much better on different coasts, because no one is really able to shine next to Cap (or in the case of the 90's it was a Black Knight lovefest on the east coast).
I actually wonder if Hickman can buck this trend. At the very least he should be able to write them without being forced into conflict, but to make Tony steal the spotlight should be something to see.
Am I the only person who liked the Kraufs' run on IM?

I enjoyed the Knauff's a lot, and was surprised how they were just brushed off Iron Man (and Marvel) in general. I think they could have done a nice job on a Secret Avengers book compared to what Brubaker did, for instance.
i don't know about cap, in uncanny avenger's they stopped just short of calling him jesus. Then he got a little racist and havok slapped him. That made me feel good. The holier than thou cap is weird to me.
I think I kind of like hating Iron Man though. It works. I mean
he blasted hulking and let him drop a distance that would be fatal for a normal human without having any real idea of the kid's powers
Seeing him get his butt kicked in other books will just be that extra bit rewarding to me now.
Also Cap feels like he's the moral equivalent of Superman in the Marvel universe. But right now all his "son" this "son" that and insistence on not letting the Young Avengers doing their thing is making him seem like such an annoying old man.
I'm about two thirds through Young Avengers Volume 1 and it's pretty good. It's not amazing but I'm engaged. Some of the origin stories were a bit lame, particularly Hawk Eye's one. Mainly I'm just ridiculously psyched for the next issue of Volume two. It's the first book I've felt this hyped about.
I can't really judge cap yet I haven't read enough Marvel stuff but in this series at least he's a tad boring and unlikable also I cracked up when he have a press conference because suddenly SILENCE! 's skits that involve captain America press conferences were that much funnier.
An interesting wink wink nudge nudge can be inferred in the names, particularly if the grandfather was her paternal one.
Smasher's name is Isabel Dare. The Avengers card has the Grandfather's first name as Dan. Dan Dare?
Now clearly this isn't actually the case since it's not a Marvel property, but it would be a neat wink and nod to the "earth person in space" thing for Izzy.
He knew Steve in WWII and was probably a Howling Commando. What with him saying that she had a heroic legacy that she didn't know about.
I think that's totally buyable.
I got that, I just didn't care for it, because that kind of thing that felt played out
when Claremont was doing it in the 80's with Wolverine (and ever since). Person of interest by convenience.
Maybe just having him be an old NASA scientist or something would have been better just to separate her from the Avengers bubble, and SWORD saw her and passed her info to the Avengers. Or make her Gravity II
So I think I'll get the entire Age of Ultron in singles issues then maybe sell them and get the hardcover later this year. I'm pretty sure the whole thing will be collected in one binding since it's only 20 issues total and the AvsX hardcover was about the same length.
the choosing subguardians thing works. So the goggles are like Green Lantern rings and they just give powers to whoever, but without even any scanning of whether the person who puts them on has positive attributes or not? I thought all the Imperial Guard had natural powers, or are the Superguardians/Subguardians like the Army Special Forces of the Shiar?

From what's been hinted at about her grandfather, the goggles decision seems anything but random

Specifically I'm referring to the theory that
Hickman was deliberately making reference to her granddad being Dan Dare, a pulp space hero from the 50s

he always just comes back anyway
and in Secret Warriors they basically explained it as "Nick Fury got kicked out for being a naughty boy" which is all you need to know
I stand by my view on re-reading Secret Wars 2 would be a lot better if not for the 8-10 " Oh man, these were written in the 90's" panels that jump directly in your face when you re-read them.

Volume 1 is 12 issues and they are 12 great issues.
But yes do not read Children's Crusade, wiki it if you must, but it's pretty terrible.

The rest of you can go home or whatever
I do like the new Smasher, she's cool, although
I think that's totally buyable.

Knowing Hickman that is totally it.
I was wondering if I can was missing a reference.
