I love making enemies in this thread and all but...
This sounds really fun.
Honestly? It really does sound like an intelligent and fun twist on the formula.
But I can't sully up the thread like this. I need to balance that comment out with some news about real games, games that actually mean something and are therefore worth talking about!
Tapping into the rich vein of lonely people playing video games and their desire to establish world records, Rift -- which recently just added a free-to-play option -- held a day-long event on Valentine's Day seeking to marry as many in-game characters as possible. It was a success, and now Rift has the Guinness World Record for most in-game marriages in a 24-hour period.
21,879 marriages took place on February 14, starting at 9am PST. Marriage was introduced in Rift's seventh major update, Carnival of the Ascended. Each participating player earned a unique in-game title, "The Avowed," and quite possibly a nagging significant other.
Yeah but who wants to carry around three portables?
Who said you needed to carry around three? Pick one of the two.
iPhone, since it also makes phone calls.
...now you see the dilemma Sony and Nintendo are in.
I meant between PSP and DS.
My PSP go essentially lives in the glove compartment of my car these days.
Of course, that's you. And personally, my iPhone and 3DS share space in my pocket. But I still like how you accidentally hit on the heart of why smartphones are potential competition for Sony and Nintendo for people who would rather have just one device in their pants. (Beyond the fact that they're selling like crazy.)
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

Yeah, no kidding. My iPhone and wallet take up most of my comfortable pants space (and no, I'm not wearing skinny jeans, I wear my jeans loose)...I can't imagine trying to jam a 3DS or my DS XL in there :P

Yikes, what a strange collection of varying conversation.
1) I'm with you Maximum, my 3DS is my traveling companion. But then again, I'm the crazy one who still doens't own a cell phone. :P
2) Is Sony's PS3 'hitting its stride' the new meme. I hadn't realized that the PS hit its stride so many years in a row. That thing should be the number one seller now!
I dunno, there's only one pair of work dockers I have that make it tough to have the iPhone and 3DS share space; the rest of the time they fit in my work pants or jeans no problem. Then again to do that, I have to put my keys and wallet in the opposite pocket, which is a little awkward, and stop carrying my Gerber (think Swiss army knife, only more industrial and the knife downplayed) entirely, which I miss.
....crap, this is going in a weird direction, isn't it?
It's crazy that this is still a major topic of conversation around here. Cloudeagle, you're way too aggressive about his score on one single game. Like ridiculously goading him. Does my Steam playtime mean that I'm secretly a shameful PC gamer at heart and I should stop pretending I'm even interested in other platforms? Does me buying Game Dev Story on Android mean that now I'm officially one of those dirty phone gamers, the people that I just loathe so much, as you interpret it?
Of course not. People are allowed to play something on a platform and enjoy it and still decide that they don't enjoy the platform overall, or common modes of play on that platform, or anything else on the subject.
He didn't accidentally hit on the heart of anything. This "choice between what platform to bring" is completely overstated. Most people play portables in the comfort of their own home. The sort of person who chooses to bring only a phone with them typically does so because they plan on making phone calls, not because they prefer gaming on that platform. After all, I carry my crappy flip phone with me everywhere...does that mean I consider laggy Tetris to be my gaming experience of choice?

I love my 3DS, but I won't take it with me day to day. When I go on trips? Sure, it has a place reserved in my laptop bag. But daily when I go to work or school, no thanks.
And it's not that it doesn't fit in my pocket because it does... I just don't care to carry both. The iPhone (Android before) is enough for me. I'll use the 3DS at home in bed or on the couch while the wife watches TV or plays a game.
The iPhone has great pick up and play time wasting games and games of moderate depth, but I don't even believe to think that it has games that even compare to the 3DS/Vita. And the ones that are ports of PSP/DS games suck up massive battery life - something I need to have to take calls.

Of course we need to be quick to point out that this is anecdotal. For all we know, 50% of iPhone owners have purchased FFT and are playing it as we speak.

Actually what he said, in his 47,000th gripe about iPhones, was "As far as I'm concerned the phone just doesn't play games." Yet he has a very, very good game on an iOS exclusive game. Just pointing out a contradiction.
No, I'm not criticizing anyone for their choices of preferred platforms. I'm generally live and let live when it comes to that. Don't like iPhone? Fine with me. But considering the raw frequency he expresses that opinion, long after we've gotten the point that he's not a fan, I think I'm allowed to tweak him a bit. And yes, it's a tease, not an aggressive attempt to change his opinion.
Besides, you never spoke up when I pestered him to buy Rock Band. Why is that? :P
At any rate. Disney's next animated movie is called Wreck-It Ralph, which centers around video game characters. Since it's an original film, they've created tons and tons of original video game characters -- Ralph is a villain from an 80s game, there's a Mario Kart knock-off called Sugar Rush, there's an original FPS in there, etc.
But, as this leaked screen from the film indicates, Disney just might have reached out to several video game makers:
The best part is that this looks like a group therapy session.
If you've never heard of Wreck-It Ralph, it's Disney's big 2012 Holiday animated film.
Wreck-It Ralph is the 9-foot-tall, 643-pound villain of an arcade video game named Fix-It Felix Jr., in which the game's titular hero fixes buildings that Ralph destroys. Wanting to prove he can be a good guy and not just a villain, Ralph escapes his game through the power cord and lands in Hero's Duty, a first-person shooter where he helps the game's hero, Sergeant Calhoun, battle against "Cy-Bugs", the game's alien invaders. He later enters Sugar Rush, a kart racing game set on tracks made of candies, cookies and other sweets. There, Ralph meets Vanellope von Schweetz, one of that game's characters, who has learned that her game is faced with a dire threat that could affect the entire arcade, and one that Ralph may have inadvertently started.
Not particularly interested? You should be. Why?

Actually Disney flicks have gotten much, much better ever since John Lasseter took over.
The more I think about it, the more I think Wreck-It Ralph is a real milestone for video gaming. Not only is one of the biggest studios on the planet doing a big-budget, heavily advertised world-release movie about video games, they're seeking out the input of at least a few video game makers. This pastime really is getting general acceptance.
You know, unless they somehow make it the most entertaining thing on the planet I can't really see an Angry Birds movie doing well, popularity of the game aside. After all, the Super Mario Bros. movie bombed, and they had to do less work to turn their abstract game into a movie.
(Yes, I know you were joking. :P )
At any rate, who's up for CODBLOPS 2?
Hugo Beyer has worked on some major titles over the years (Beatles Rock Band, Anno 1404), including some still unreleased ones (Doom 4, Aliens: Colonial Marines), at a variety of studios (Terminal Reality, Liquid Development). What stands out to us, however is his current work with Nerve Software on what he refers to as "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2," as seen on his public LinkedIn page.
"But who is Nerve Software?" you're probably wondering. We were too! It turns out, Nerve has done a bunch of contract work for Activision in the past, including Treyarch-developed James Bond title Quantum of Solace, as well as ... Call of Duty: Black Ops (the first one).
So, there's one more lead in the "Activision and Treyarch are probably gonna release Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 this year" news cycle. Between domain registrations and reported retailer listings in Europe, we're thinking an announcement can't be too far off. Activision and Nerve Software had yet to respond to request for comment as of publishing.
I want to correct some horrible falsehoods given by this very thread in the last page or so.
The DS does not have the wretched, vile, poorly formed prequel of a game known as FFT. It has the glorious, god given, near perfect experience known only as FFTA2.
PSP does have two different versions of that wretched game, and iphone has the crappier one with the strangely not fixed at all loadtimes and the bad stage English.

I don't actually play any of those games, I just know there are titles on both platforms with "Final", "Fantasy", and "Tactics" in their respective titles.
So CODBLOPS2 this year.. Think they're going to reach for a MW4 next year, or try something new (Future Warfare?)
With THQ on the ropes, we might be ready for a new Mars shooter
Or maybe they'll go full circle and put it back at WW2
If Activision had any sense of the narrative beauty that the world we live in can sometimes provide, they would set their Future Warfare game in the year 2015.

you do realize that the guy that is in charge of all things Disney right now is the awesome John Lasseter, the genius behind Pixar. This man has single handedly made Disney awesome again. He brought back hand drawn animation, he green lit the revival of the Muppets, to awesome effect!
For years, I have been down on Disney, but buying Pixar and putting Lasseter in charge were two of the best decisions they have made in years.

Both are terrible, flawed, and ugly games, especially in comparison to FFT/TO.

TO is a lot better than FFT, I agree. Better than FFTA/FFTA2 as well. Being the best game with the word Tactics in your title pretty much means that.
