So I need a new domain registrar. I've used RegisterFly for years now, but now with all the ICANN issues and problems they're having, I think it's time to jump ship. Can anyone suggest a good registrar for me?
Here's what I'm looking for:
- Inexpensive registering/renewing
- Nice control panel
- Ability to use some sort of privacy protection on my WHOIS info
I don't need hosting as I have my own webserver. I just need a new service to help me manage my domains.
My favorite registrar right now is register4less.com. Very easy to use, clean, interface. Private listing is included in the registration cost (which are admittedly a few dollars higher than, say, godaddy but less than most of those once you include the private registration) rather than charging an extra $5-$10/yr like many registrars do. They also provide a proxy e-mail that changes regularly which will forward the e-mails to your regular address so that if the contact e-mail makes it onto a spammer's list, it only works temporarily.
We use Namecheap to do all of our domain registration. It's $8.88/domain, with 'WhoisGuard', their privacy protection, offered free with new registrations. I find their control panel pretty easy to use and have never had any issues with them. Also, unlike some registrars I've come across, they won't squat on domains that you've searched, so you can take your time deciding to purchase a domain name without worrying about it disappearing. We currently have about 10 domains registered with them, though that number changes as we pass them off to clients as we finish jobs, but I find it easy to handle multiple domains with them.

I'm using Register.com, after having bad luck with a discount company (DirectNIC).
Probably cost more than most, but very organized, lots of control options. I had some trouble with FTP'ing from my Mac, but you said you're hosting, so no problem there.
