Ok, I have to step in and offer at least a little perspective on the first question. For those of you who aren't quite getting it, he's referring to a NP having their own autonomous practice, not perform surgery or anything of that sort. They go to a ton more school than the standard amount for an RN (which is actually still quite a lot) and the whole point is for them to be able to peform the same duties a doctor with a practice does. As it stands currently (in the US) a NP can do everything a doctor can in that setting but is required to be in a practice with a doctor. They write prescriptions, diagnose illnesses, everything you would expect from your doctor you would see normally. Also, nurses do a lot more than hand out pills etc.
