I'd say it's really a question of what games he thinks he'd prefer. I mean, there's a lot to be said for the gay potential of Katamari Damacy, for example. Or Gears of War, I guess. We all know gaming is about the games themselves rather than the systems (right guys?), and of course the game companies don't give a flying fuck who plays their games.
Point him to the sites above, let him get a feel for what he might want to play, and then pinpoint the system that has the most of those games. In the meantime, get him a DS. Everyone loves a DS.
