FFT: Lion War (PSP) - new screens, local wi-fi multi! (NSF56K)

edited April 2007 in Games and Technology
EDIT: Note: Not online play. It's local wireless play, not infrastructure, AFAIK.

Found from NeoGAF. Don't have a PSP? Don't blame us. Blame yourself or God.

Wireless multiplayer! I didn't know about this before ...

And I don't know if these are really new or not, but holy shit, these cutscenes look gorgeous:

Now...when they say based on the original game - does this mean it's a new adventure with the same characters, or it's a remake?

Either way - this is AWESOME news.

I am practicing buying this in my mind, so that when the day comes, I don't explode with happiness.

Even if they don't release it here I can just import it because it's the PSP oh god yes I've waited so long.

It's a remake of the original FFT, but apparently with a few new jobs (Onion Knight is one, I know), these gorgeous cutscenes and I believe a few new characters, including from FF12:
    Balthier!

It's really just an excuse to sell us our childhoods all over again, but goddamnit, it's Final Fantasy Tactics, man. I still have my PS1 copy, but I'll probably end up buying this, too. Between this and Professor Layton for the DS, I'm really glad to see more (what looks like) hand-drawn animation back into gaming.

Dammit, I need to edit the thread title but I can't seem to figure it out.

To clarify: It's wireless local multiplayer, not online play. I realized it looked a bit ambiguous in the thread title. :(

Also: I don't think anything's been said, but I wonder if S-E is going to push for a re-translation of the game. Shit, that would make it worthy of a purchase all by itself.

FFXII's localization isn't that special, beyond Balthier's lines.

It's not that it's special, but simply that it's quite good, compared to most games.

I've seen murmurs of it across here and other forums, but I can't peg down any hard confirmation of it.

It would make sense; most of the permutations of the FF remakes got retranslated, and the FF4/FF6 translations are wonderful. Tactics in particular could benefit from some clarity, partially because the script was clunky in some parts and partially because the plot is so freaking confusing. And the two GBA FF remakes showed a great balance between keeping some "classic" lines while improving the script quality overall.
I hope they get Alexander Smith to do it, he's been behind two of the best localizations ever (VS and FFXII)
Me too. He did a fantastic job with what I played of those two games, and he's already familiar with some of Ivalice names anyway, right?

But yeah, there's also allegedly an FFTA2 in the works; right now it's still the red-headed stepchild to the portable FFT, but FF remakes are always juggernauts.

I'd generally agree with you on principle, but I'd argue the fanbase for FFT is much larger than FFTA, and I know the latter left a lot of people jaded. I didn't absolutely abhor FFTA, but it definitely felt thin to me; they're two very different games.

The second project is called Final Fantasy Tactics A2: The Sealed Grimoire. I don't think anything else is really known about it, but it definitely seems like a continuation of the "Advance" line as opposed to the traditional FFT line. I didn't even know it was confirmed for DS, but it would be terribly silly for it to be on the GBA.

Maybe I should beef up the OP a little; I thought this was fairly well known.

Portable FFTactics would be right up there with portable Final Fantasy 1-6 on my DS. Which is really nice. I don't see myself dropping the cash money on a PSP though. I definetly will check out those cutscenes via the interwebs, but spending that much money for a new system then buying the game itself? That does sound a little over the top for a single game.
