D&D Question!

OK, so I'm kind of new to the lingo surrounding D&D/Wizards of the Coast/etc. I mean, I played Baldur's back when it came out, but I never really understood all the intricacies. So, I've recently acquired Icewind Dale, and I'm in the process of creating a party, and someone mentioned to me using "Race [insert stat here]". What exactly is meant when one says "Race Charisma" or "Race Dexterity"?
