I have an Acer Aspire 5532 and the battery won't charge while the laptop is running.
So to use it I need to shut it down then charge the battery completely, then I can use it and while its plugged in it will hold the charge however if I take the charger out at any point then reconnect it it won't charge. Or rather it charges for about 30 seconds then the light starts flashing and I'm back to battery power only.
Any suggestions on what the problem might be or a solution?
First of all inspect both battery and laptop battery compartment for dust or burn marks - as it could be as simple as observing a physical issue, if all is well:
1) Re-install battery drivers: Device Manager > Batteries > right-click 'Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing' and Un-install > Let windows autodiscover new driver
2) Check battery capacity with BatteryCare: http://batterycare.net/en/download.html (depending on laptop age, may have run down cycles)
3) If in warranty get laptop serviced
4) If not in warranty, buy new battery
Often batterys do not charge when the laptop is on if the laptop is not getting the right amount of power. Underneath your laptop there will be a sticker that tells how much volts and amps the laptop wants. Often the ac adapter has to be within a certain tolerance before the laptop allows the battery to charge, too much over or definately under the laptop will not charge the bat while it is on. If reinstalling the driver does not work double check the voltage and of the ac adapter with a multimeter. Touch one probe to the pin on the inside, and rest one agaisnt the metal ring on the outside. AC adapters can go faulty pretty easily, and that can lead to charging issues. Its worthwhile to check it out before dumping 60$ on a replacement battery.
Most likely it is the battery though and you probably need to have it replaced.
if your laptop says its charging when it is plugged in but its not try the following:
leave it charged in take the back up battery out. shake it a few times. stick it back in. it should actually be charging now. fully charge and you should be able to remove the charger with out shutting ur laptop off.
