I'm going to start off by asking straight up - has anyone had a Pen Pal before? I've toyed with the idea for about a year but haven't gotten around to it yet. I've always been interested in learning about other cultures and whatnot. I've got a close couple friends in University who are exchange students from mostly from India, Egypt, and a few European countries and they have a lot of interesting stories and facts about their homes overseas. It really fascinates me and I'm always excited to talk about these strange places that are considerably different from my own.
Anyway, back to the point - I've been thinking of trying this pen pal thing. I'm pretty sure I'd like to narrow it down between somewhere like Japan or somewhere in Europe (preferably non-English speaking because even though I don't see myself wanting to learn a new language anytime soon, I'd be nice to pick up a few sayings just for fun). Problem is, I don't know where to find Pen Pals. I've used google search to find sites like japan-guide and whatnot, but I don't know how legitimate they are. In fact, some of the sites seem somewhat fishy, while others almost seem like an online relationship thing which is not what I'm looking for. I'm also assuming these pen pals are via email or maybe even skype/msn, but do pen pals still use Snail Mail? It'd be great to talk electronically but I think it'd be really exciting to receive a post card or letter from a friend overseas - kind of like a surprise waiting for you in the mailbox come the morning when you're out on the porch skipping through the junk mail (:

I have a small collection of friends from all across the world that I talk to via MSN and texting on a regular basis. I guess technically you could call them pen pals but it really doesn't feel like they are since the replies are instantaneous.
