This news does make me question his position from a couple years ago to not take Valve public (stock), as he stated integrity in video game design as the reason (boards of directors don't give a shit about integrity, and he's right). Could be that he's rich as fuck and wants to control that. That or maybe it's both, I'll give ol' Gabe the benefit of the doubt.
Taking Valve public would set him up to be rich as fuck anyway. I'd rather Newell get filthy rich off of a privately held Valve while keeping the company a great place to work for than take it public and have a bunch of fat cat Wall Street types squeezing every possibly penny out of Valve and Steam to the ultimate detriment of the platform and workplace before it finally collapses under its own weight and they waddle off to find the next thing to wring dry.
Let's not forget Newell was already pretty goddamned rich from his stint at Microsoft (one of the "Microsoft Millionares") before he founded Valve. He basically made his money, decided he now wanted to make vidja without compromise with his phat loot, and in the end just got even more rich.
But seriously, kotaku is asking for a 4chan link for verification?
I want Game Journalists are Incompetent Fuckwits to come back. Even better, I want the entire gaming journalism to burn and be recognised at large, not just to us, for the unfunny joke and complete disgrace to the word "journalism" it is. They deserve as much.
As much fun as it is to make fun of people who are incompetent fuckwits geese, there are quite a few journos in the industry who try very hard to live up to professional standards. Just as it's very difficult for game developers to work on their dream game, it's difficult for game journalists to keep up professional standards and get paid for doing the work. There are misguided (and sometimes downright stupid) site policies to deal with, PR goons to wrangle, ridiculous deadlines, employer demands for breaking stories no matter what, etc. I'm not whining... I love doing games writing for a living, but it's a lot more difficult to do it well (while getting paid for it) than it looks from the outside.
Really, we deal with a lot of the same crap that mainstream journalists deal with, and I don't think we as a whole do much worse than what passes for general entertainment journalism these days. When you're looking to break news on an industry, you can either attempt to wrangle exclusives out of the industry (very difficult unless you're one of the biggest corporate-owned sites) or to do your best to trawl the Internet and dig up sources for information before anybody else does. I personally prefer the approach of not attempting to break news, but to build my reputation on writing accurate articles and interesting commentary. It's not always easy to convince sites (especially if you're in the news department) to go with that, however. Just like in TV news, sensational and "breaking" stories are the kings of page hits, and anybody in the trenches of any kind of journalism knows that sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to earn a living.

Honestly? Games journalism as a whole cannot get better until we find some way to have writers not be dependent on game publishers for pretty much everything. If a publisher doesn't want to answer your question, you'll probably never find out what it is you want to know.

From Jim Sterling about this fiasco:
Apparently the listing story was an hilarious fake set up for the semi-annual, "lol game journalists will believe things sometimes" prank. Oh ho, you got us all with your plausible scenario that we found plausible. Seriously though, good joke guys.

Gaming would have survived--it might not have been as good or glorious, but it would have survived. Of course, I say this as someone who still plays as many games from outside the Anglosphere as from within, and until quite recently, they had to survive without Steam. But that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve that big pile of money for the glory. And other things.

They also seem desperate to make friends in the industry or work in the industry or all that shit. Conflicts of interest up the ying-yang.
The biggest problem is games journalism, as a whole, isn't journalism. It's a quasi-independant marketing arm of the games industry.

Oh by the way gentlemen, Idle Thumbs is back. While they've been releasing special casts meant for people who backed the Kickstarter, the first publicly released podcast was put out yesterday. GDC 2012, part 1. You can find it in the archive from the site, look under The Idle Thumbs Podcast, most recent date: http://www.idlethumbs.net/
Spoilers: Nick Breckon is present, OH SHIT. And Steve Gaynor since he's also not going to be around all the time.
On a scale of Giant Bomb to.. uh.. crap I don't think I listen to any other gaming podcasts now..
Let me retry that. How would you rate Idle Thumbs in comparison to the Giant Bombcast, since that's the only gaming podcast I listen to with any frequency (i.e. when there's a topic I'm interested in)

I haven't really listened to the Giant Bombcast. I have heard clips, and I did see a livestream of them with the Idle Thumbs crew last year. It's at least on par with Giant Bomb though, I promise.
Edit - And really the two different crews are kinda tight with each other as if they were all working together day to day, to begin with. It's kinda weird how the video game "press" has a community within it.
True, but Vidya Gaem Jornalsm is on a whole different level. I mean, there's some people out there who are actually doing it right, but as a whole, it's just... Ugh.

Well sure. At any rate, I really do recommend Idle Thumbs. These guys look at video games from a different perspective that's pretty rad I think.
In the new episode the rolled out, they get around to talking about Super Metroid, mostly because some of them played it in hindsight and not in their childhood. And it made me just... man, I've always loved the game, but over time I've lost sight of things I should've appreciated more.
Might have to give Idle Thumbs a try. My favorite gaming podcast is still 1UP Yours, with the Penny Arcade Podcast being a close second (if you can count that in the same spectrum). Right now I'm into the Bombcast and 8-4 Play, which I especially like, since Marc McDonald was one of my favorite people from 1UP proper and he is the host. Most of the people I really liked from that site have since left of course, save for Jeremy Parish.

I'm not sure how a game thats basically made to just mimic a childs game thats hundreds of years old is the winner of most innovative. It kind of boggles the mind. Skylanders or La Noire seems the most reasonable as 'doing something different'.
That Sword of Sworcery game is pretty cool. Not my cup of tea but its definitely a well done game.
Whoa, Terraria's on there; too bad the dev's a (benign mind you) flake.
Yeah, but that one I'm willing to excuse for being on the list since it's really REALLY recent with regard to the developer dropping off. But Team Bondi being listed in the category of best newest studio or whatever is... like, what the hell. I'm pretty sure they're disqualified.
I just feel sorry for the devs who had to serve a delusional, megalomaniac, asshole boss.

But even if "Best Debut" was willing to set aside not being able to continue to produce games, Team Bondi is questionable because as far as I remember L.A. Noire was REALLY floaty with regard to the reception. It wasn't universally panned or praised. But as far as this forum lead me to believe, the game was ho-hum and let down expectations.
Man, Portal 2 dominated those awards, but didn't win GOTY. Weird.
Having really high production values, but not having a lot to experience / play, would put it in that position. I'm not slamming the game by the way, but I'm just saying.
There should have been something of a "Most Improved Student Award" so that Sonic Generations could have gotten some recognition. That would kind of be an interesting category in general too.

At the same time, though, isn't Skyrim totally lacking any multiplayer or online component, while Portal 2 had essentially an entirely separate, equally sized game as it's online component?
That said, I haven't finished skyrim, so I reserve judgement. But, up to the point I'm at, I personally got more enjoyment out of portal because of how much fun I had with it with my friends.
It's kinda boggling that you could even compare the games, though. Which kinda shows how funky these sorts of rankings are.

Would it apply to studios or a series? I guess the former would make more sense. But it's a great idea!

I love seeing Bastion and Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery take home more (metaphorical) hardware at these awards. Two absolutely stellar games with amazing commitment to their vision.
Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

Heh, I guess that being applied to a studio would make more sense. TSR posting just made me think about that as I'm also happy to be playing good Sonic games once again.

Yeah, the thing is, a series can be handled by other studios. But video games are matured enough to a point where we can have a category for "Most Redeemed Series" perhaps. But the Most Improved Student idea fucking rules for studios / developers.

Sonic Generations should be the model for any series that wishes to redeem itself from being crap. It just feels so... right compared to the original games, yet is so massively improved and modern.
Just talking about it makes me want to go back for some time trials.
