There's this Swedish community. For many a year lots of people have had a "Copy this to your profile if you're against child porn! <link>" on their profiles. It's everywhere.
The domain linked to in the text has been expired for years. Nobody even clicks the link to check it out, because that's too much effort when you can just cut and paste some text to your profile.
I wouldn't click the link anyway because I don't want to accidentally click on child porn.
Especially now that the children are invisible. You can never be too careful.
Best post.
I'm super uncomfortable with white paramilitary groups lobbying for direct intervention with indigenous peoples when indigenous peoples don't want another war fucking up their already fucked up country.
Edit: This was probably already said, but Kony left Uganda almost 10 years ago and violence towards children has dropped 80%. It really isn't an issue.
I find people raging against slacktavism to be incredibly silly.
with that being said, I haven't actually sat down for the Kony 2012 video, so no real judgements.
Slacktivism is fucking obnoxious in social justice circles and it should be smacked down at all times. Usually it is the upper middle class white social justice folks doing the slacktivating and it is super terrible.

It just reeks of our current generations obsession with cynicism and sarcasm. Any attempt to make a difference is just picked away and critizised until its nothing.

My facebook feed thing has been lighting up with Kony posts for two days now, and I don't have too many "upper middle class white social justice folks" on my list. Most of them white, sure, but if you call "on food stamps and struggling with a part time job" upper class, more power to you...
Edit: This was probably already said, but Kony left Uganda almost 10 years ago and violence towards children has dropped 80%. It really isn't an issue.
Except for those 20%.
20% could be as many as 3 or 4 kids. These people want us to invade to save a few kids?
Uganda also has gold. Germany and Switzerland want their gold back from the US but we don't have any. We invaded Iraq and Libya over the petrodollar and we plan on invading Iran over it, but we can't invade Germany and Switzerland for trading oil outside of the US dollar so what does the US do? It invades other countries for it's gold supply.

In other words, generalizations also terrible.
Weird, I don't think I was addressing struggling people so I'm not sure why that got brought up.

Really? I don't think criticism and cynicism are the same thing.

Cynicism fuels criticism just to stay with the trends.

It's reasonably safe to assume a few thousand more than 3 or 4.
the entire joke of what _J_ posted is someone else having a bit of fun with someone else's kneejerk and slightly racist reactions

Here's why I don't think slacktivism is going to totally take hold here.
As soon as Kony became a thing, two things happened:
1) Teachers- like, middle school, even some elementary school teachers- started coming out of the woodwork saying how their students came up to them and asked about Kony. They largely decided to take it and run with it. So the kids aren't just going to be seeing the Kony2012 video and have that be the end of it. A good number of them want to know more, so any oversimplifications can be filled in. (And I'm willing to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume that they're aware Kony won't get caught in the next couple days.)
2) The media looks to be running with it too. Or at least, the members of the media that have bureaus in eastern Africa or who have covered the LRA at some point in the past. And that's generally going to be the really good journalists, the ones who get up off their butts and score assignments to Uganda. Your political shoutfest shows are caught completely flat-footed by the reporters who can say 'I was in Uganda X years ago, and when I was there...' And they're not going to be the kind of people who will see an opportunity like this fall in their lap and then just let it drop in a week. They're going to stay on it as long as they can. (Anderson Cooper, for instance. He does not let topics drop easily.) As long as they stay on it, it stays at least somewhat in the public eye. And the longer they stay on it, the better chance there is that people with actual workable solutions are able to come forward and point everyone in the right direction.
The infrastructure's in place to keep this as a topic past the normal trending cycle. Some people will get bored with it, but enough people won't that I think this can sustain, and those people are absolutely going to see more than just a single half-hour video. At the very least, I'm willing to give it a chance to happen before I get disappointed in people.
As far as Invisible Children's concerned, I think their part in this whole thing is largely complete. They wanted to do some awareness-raising thing on April 20. I don't think it's even necessary now. This went bigger than I think they possibly could have imagined. Awareness raised. They blew up the whole damned Internet. So I don't see what point a further awareness-raising next month is going to accomplish. They wanted to make him famous; he's famous. Mission accomplished on their end. The goal is set. Now it's time to hand the reins to people who know how to best achieve that goal. We don't need to wait for April 20 to do that, and Invisible Children is not that group of people.
I have a new soccer blog The Minnow Tank. Reading it psychically kicks Sepp Blatter in the bean bag.

I pretty seriously despise this whole invisible children thing. My only positive, non-dismissively cynical feeling is that I genuinely hope a few people get turned onto Doctors Without Borders and other legitimate rad charities.
I mean I don't think a statistically significant number of people getting into this slacktivisty neo-colonialist crap will research more legitimate stuff, but I guess a few is better then none.
It just reeks of our current generations obsession with cynicism and sarcasm. Any attempt to make a difference is just picked away and critizised until its nothing.
The argument is that slacktivism isn't an attempt to make a difference.

If the president had any real power, he'd be able to live wherever the fuck he wanted.
Is "issue fatigue" a real thing? I can't find a wikipedia page for it, which in my world means that it doesn't exist.
Yes people posting a picture of someone who looks just like a genocidal maniac in an attempt to be so clever.
'cism
I like when kneejerk reactions are later shown to be misunderstandings.
I also like that the picture utilizes the idea that all black people look the same.
two guys wearing the exact same outfit, with a mustache, posing in a jungle.
HOW COULD THEY EVER BE CONFUSED?
VS.
'cism.
Plus they're both black, and most people are racists who think all black people look alike.
Totes, that's it.

The whole joke really speaks to the tragic fact that some people haven't watched enough Arrested Development to know who Carl Weathers is.

WHY IS BUSTER TALKING TO A UGANDAN WARLORD?!?!
It would probably contain the meat of Ugandan children, and they are notoriously stringy.
Are you confusing him with the child-heart-eating General Butt Naked?
Well they're both black, and they've both worn hats, so how could I possibly tell the difference?
Oh, my bad.
