The current gen systems are six years old so it isn't unreasonable that a tablet would be more powerful. Although the latest revisions are only two years old, so why so big? Probably because it's cheaper that way I'd guess. Fuck you, Sony and Microsoft, this is why a ten year life cycle is really dumb.

Is it? Is that really why?

Of course, the other half of the story is that the iPad costs $500 and up. The 360 and PS3 do not.

Luckily, they agree with you. The major gaming corporations realize that making new systems cost them a lot of money, and that's why they try not to do it as much as possible. They lose money on console sales due to the cost of development, and a new system nets them next to nothing in new players or in gaming ability by this point. The entire discussion about a "Higher def screen" is ridiculous anyways, but is certainly endemic of the gaming industry with tends to think that more pixels mean better games.

But those two don't have a HDTV crammed into their case as well.

I like the design of the PS3 Fat. I'm not sure that I would like a stationary console that was as thin as a portable.

Thought the space was for preventing overheating.

On the other hand, iPads don't need space for disk drives (which are always a little bulky) and HDDs, or fans.

Sure they do, a 60 GB launch PS3 was $599 but damn that thing is a tank by all definitions, and it's fully backwards compatible.

But we're not comparing it at launch, we're comparing to today. A new iPad with all it's features and "more power than a PS3" TODAY is more expensive than a PS3 TODAY. At the PS3 launch, the iPad didn't exist, and probably couldn't have existed at a $500 price point.

I'm not very up to speed on mobile hardware. Does the new iPad actually sport high end CPU/GPU(s) to supply that fancy screen with fancy content? I'm assuming it runs some high efficiency mobile chipset, which should seriously limit the direct comparisons one could reasonably make to a game console's price and size.

We at CheckPoint fully admit that "iPad > XBox" is a woefully unfair comparison.

It's just funny to us that it does have more RAM and higher-than-HD graphics.
The actual graphics processing just isn't going to be as good.
