The last EA game I played was NHL 2001, which although years old, is I think one of the best iterations of the series in terms of both realism and fun. I haven't bought a new NHL game since then, and I've seen the series go both up and down. But with the playoffs only 30 days away, I'm getting the itch to jump back into the series.
So for those of you who own or have played a lot of NHL 07, and with the understanding that there will of course be an 08 version coming out in September or so, is it worth investing in the series again?
NHL 07 is a very very good hockey game, takes a little while to get used to moving your offense without getting offside, but once you learn how to do that it's very fun.
Also the skill stick is a great addition to the game, it makes everything a lot more fluid and you can become a complete beast with it.
I'll go devil's advocate and say go with ESPN instead ... the gameplay for EA just seems too much like an arcade game and it's not that difficult to get a 10 - 7 game ... ESPN is a lot more realistic with their defensive controls ... I guess it really just depends on what your looking for ...
I've been buying EA hockey games since the '92 game on Genesis. I jumped ship to 2K for 2K3 because I thought the gameplay was much more of what I wanted my hockey game to be.
I bought the 2K series from 2K3 until 2K6, and then I tried NHL 07 and I was blown away.
The majority of the game is decent for the most part. Nothing is really outstanding and nothing is really broken either. It's the shooting that makes the game fun. And since apparently EA is treating the series like Madden and are going to concentrate on a different fact of the game every year; NHL 08 should be even better.

Like menus displaying half sideways, and scoring goals that don't count until the puck has been sitting in the back of the net for ten seconds.
Bad goal detection ect...
Also, the fighting is no good.
360 versoin btw
