There was this firefighting game on the snes, I can't remember what it was called, but it was an awful game that i couldn't get enough of. I found it funny how the game was about fighting fire and yet had bosses (Such as the on-fire robot) and was pretty short, but it was so cheesy that i loved it to death.

It was from a top down perspective (ala the legend of zelda) if anyone else might know what i'm talking about.

that game rocks! i remember putting it in and then i was really surprised, it had a good story too. it was like that cool sega firefighter arcade game. i know a firefighter game came out for ps2, and it got bad ratings, but if done right a firefighting console game would be fun. i don't remember the title either, wish i did so i could go back and play it.

Wow I'd never seen the full intro before, I will no longer be satisfied with a game intro unless it has someone jumping into a missile silo and flying a ICBM into the sky until it explodes and still be alive.

And don't forget running on top of a helicopter. On the spinning blades. Shooting things. While in the air. While doing a barrelroll.

Ground Zero Texas - I played it on a friend's mega cd and ALWAYS loved it. I bought it recently despite not having a Mega CD. I should not mention how I play it.

Road Avenger - Another dodgy FMV game that grabbed me so damn much. I loved it.

Ripper - Another FMV game that was panned.

Phantasmagoria - Yes, I'm an FMV whore really.

    Phantasmagoria 2 - See above.

    and last but not least:

Rise of the Robots. - I liked it. The first one. Don't hurt me.

I could probably list a ton more but they'd largely be Amiga games and probably very very obscure. I used to like awful games. I couldn't help it.

When the mood strikes me to play, I'm usually surprised that it doesn't suck as much as I remembered. It's actually fun once you realize that it's a really, really slow vertical shmup with a cover system and not, in the least bit, a free-roaming 3rd-person action/adventure game. I also have a bit of a bias towards the game's aesthetics.

Ya know, I've never understood the hate for Shaq-Fu. I friend got it when it came out, and as much as we loved Street Fighter back then, we played Shaq Fu too, and not in a "so bad its good" way, but because we genuinely liked it. In fact I never even knew Shaq Fu was supposed to be such a bad game until EGM started beating it like a dead horse a few years back. Surely I can't be alone here? I need to track down a copy.

To add to the Sega CD FMV horror:

    Tomcat Alley:

    Tomcatalley_megacd.png

And the other Night Trap-esque game, Double Switch:

    reviewdoubleswitch-1.jpg

Apparently though, now that I look back, those two are probably among the best of the FMV genre (as in they scored higher than most)

I thought there was an adult FMV game back then? I remeber them making a big fuss about it. I remeber those 8-bit, 16bit days when the internet wasn't the super porno information highway it is now.

    Body Harvest.

Unresponsive controls, bland environments, a colour pallet of about 16, frustrating level design.

Yet somehow, somehow, one of the greatest games of the N64 era.

Perhaps it was the battle music, the alien hierarchy, or just the strangeness of it all. I love it.

    Remake please.

    <3

Totally agree. I loved that entire game, although the last game was a bit of a let down. But damn, I loved piloting and driving all those different vehicles throughout history, and the variety in available vehicles was astounding for a game. This game is, by far, my favourite DMA designs game (followed by uniracers/unirally).

A remake would result in me buying whichever system it is for.

Edit: what the hell, here's some pics.

God it was ugly. But who cares, I got to drive cars, tanks, boats, planes, helicopters, and a train. Virtual Console plz k thnx.

This game was one of the first N64 games announced, and one of the last of the original "dream team" finished. It had such a maligned development cycle, because they just couldn't figure out how to pack all the awesome in. (and according to Wiki, because this was the height of Nintendo's demanding ways with companies that worked for it.)

But, more importantly, this game led to a pair of much more influential DMA design games...

Like others have mentioned, I really think a lot of the ET hate comes from people who never played it.

I owned it when it came out and once you figured out what you were supposed to do -and in this it was sort of unique because for an atari game (or really any game at the time) it was very non-linear- it was a lot of fun. I think in a lot of ways it was ahead of its time and THAT was the major problem.

The only game I remember being similar to it was the Superman game for the atari, which also was pretty great once you figured it out.

This doesn't quite fit the topic 100%, but NBA Ballers was a fantastic arcadey basketball game that got lost in the bling-bling bullshit. If they had put more emphasis on the fact that the game was produced by Mark Turmell (daddy of NBA Jam) instead of HAY GUYS RICH PEOPLE AND RAPPERS ARE AWESOME RIGHT LOL, it would have done much better.

Seriously though, if you like arcade basketball and can get past the lifestyle shit, go pick the PS2 version up, it's cheap. Not the sequel though...while the single-player was marginally improved, everything else suffered, including the gameplay engine (which is almost exactly the same except for some unfortunate glitches not present in the original.)

Also, the sequel's "on fire" music blows ass.

The (mechanical) egg-woman makes me sad. Something about time lost, and her clicking and whirring.

She pissed me off pretty bad. That was probably my least favorite part in the game.

I don't if I'd call Lighthouse a bad game either. Sure it wasn't the best, but among point and click adventures it was pretty sweet. I loved driving the different vehicles, and that part with the big monster in the castle...sheer awesome. Some of the puzzles were pretty impossible though, like the mini-sub.

Gameplay wise, Double Switch is much better than Night Trap(more replay value, more awesome traps, tougher game), but it can't touch Night Trap for comedy gold.

The traps are fan-service city though. Only Deception does them better, and that's a totally different kind.

Road Avenger's also great. There's also Wirehead, one of SCD's last FMV games if I remember right.

I remember a horde of glitches I could run into during the egg-woman part of the game. But otherwise her repetition just didn't annoy me as much as other adventure games. There was something mystical about finally getting off earth on to some crazy gear-infested wonderland, and find it deserted except for a burnt husk, and a repeating record.

Was the story any good? Loved the Shadow books and the original Ender's Game (and Speaker), enjoyed Xenocide, but was totally WTF by Children of the Mind.

I'm probably going to enjoy the Ender's Game video game, whenever that comes out. I fairly certain it will suck.

The story does feel very similar to some parts of the Ender world. It picks up right in the middle of a conflict you know little about, it seems. The story gets better as you move along. Two particular moments are pretty heartbreaking, even...
Choosing your girlfriend or brother to save, only to take the last escape pod and see the other being scanned by the invading aliens. Did I mention the aliens kill everyone after they scan them?

Later, you get to watch whoever you saved drown in front of your eyes, and there's nothing you can do to save them.

I'm not going to ruin the secret ending, even in spoilers. Let's just say that it's really confusing, then sad, then really confusing again.

I am so pissed off that this story is never going to finish.

I was also kinda confused that there were multiple parts to the story where you could choose a different action, like using a stunner or a pistol, that actually had no effect on the overall outcome of the story. But I chalk that up more to the game being woefully unrevised.

Oni is my pick, but then again it was honestly a very good game hidden behind some very shitty and frustrating level design. It also had a pretty good story, and I would really like to play a sequel.

The action was good. Decent PC controls, and very solid and fluid feeling with good integration of weapons (nevermind that some of the effects of those weapons were insanely annoying). I found most of the moves to be fairly useful, and the ultimate was when you were fighting someone in front of you and, when somebody else tried to attack you from the side or behind you managed to kick or punch them without changing direction. (At least that was my favorite.)

I finally gave up and sold Gladius. I thought it was going to be Shining Force + Legend of Dragoon, and I was very disappointed.

The stun/lethal choice does have an effect on the game and the story. If you kill him, the soliders dislike you and won't help you. If you just stun him, they come to your aid in some levels, and I believe you talk to one in a cutscene that's more helpful.

I was also kinda confused that there were multiple parts to the story where you could choose a different action, like using a stunner or a pistol, that actually had no effect on the overall outcome of the story. But I chalk that up more to the game being woefully unrevised.

I am a whore for Advent Rising. I decided long ago that if I ever win the lottery, I will personally fund the rest of the trilogy.

I think I've played through the game 6 or 7 times now... I just love it. Jumping on an alien's body, breaking his neck, then riding his carcass to the ground while you shoot his too buddies between their eyes in slow-motion is simply the most awesome thing any game has ever let me do. I've never felt like more of a badass than I have in Advent.

I don't know if it's considered bad, or if people just assume it's bad because the series had really gone downhill - but I just picked up Crash Tag Team Racing for the Cube and have to say it's really, really good. The graphic style is well done, the racing is great (although not Mario Kart great) and the on foot stuff is fun too. The best part is during a race you can merge with another vehicle and while they drive you act as the turret and shoot the other racers which is amazingly fun. I highly recommend it (although will admit there are a few frame rate hiccups, nothing major though).

This was the first "Gory" game I ever played, it was so much fun playing at BK's burgers with my buddies :-)
