Display Adapter Problem (XP)

So I'm working on a computer for an old friend...and I hadn't installed a new video card in a while, but I followed the instructions to disable the display adapter via Device Manager first and then shutdown. Install new card and turn the computer on.

But now! After removing the display adapters, and then shutting down. When I boot back up, I see the Dell logo, I can access BIOS, and then I see the XP loading thing with the blue progress bar. But then when the desktop is supposed to display, all it is...is black. The monitor is NOT getting a "No video signal". I can do everything in Windows still, I just cannot see a damned thing.

Safe mode hangs on mup.sys. VGA mode fails; black but functioning desktop. Last known good configuration fails in the same way. So I tried ALL three of those again after pulling the video card out. Then I put the video card back in to see if the BIOS could even see the video card (yes). I tried putting card in, and using the onboard video and then the computer spasms and tells me to turn the computer off and plug the monitor plug into the new video card port.

So is there a way to restore the old display adapters (I can get recovery console!) or am I screwed? Oh, and what noob mistake did I make? :(

(I have tried googling for this issue, but all the threads I have found so far do not have any definitive answer)

EDIT:
Computer is a Dell Dimension 5150
Video card: ATI x1300 PCI-Express
