My girl and I were looking for a short trip a few hours from LA and were leaning towards San Luis Obispo. It's been years since I've been, and I don't think she's ever been, just curious if you guys have any thoughts on fun things do to in the area. I know Hearst Castle is close, and there is supposedly wine tasting in the area, but I am mostly ignorant of the entire place. I also know Paso Robles nearby has hot springs, but any idea if they are any good?
If anyone has ideas on good accommodations, sights to see, etc, I'd be super super grateful.
I graduated from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, so I can recommend a few activities! If you're in SLO on Thursday evening, downtown hosts a good sized farmers market. All sorts of local produce, plus delicious barbecue, kettle corn, and drinks. Fun times. If you're feeling like hiking around, you can hit one of the trails. I recommend Bishop's Peak. Pretty laid back 45 minute climb with a full view of the area at the end. Pismo/Avila Beach are nice, especially with the weather we've had all winter (60's to 70's, hard to complain! Though a few days of rain here and there). Avila also has hot springs, and some farms you can visit to pick your own fruit or buy whatever goodies they've grown recently. North County (Paso Robles and Atascadero) will have wine tasting, if that's appealing at all. It's a laid back area, but plenty of nice ways to spend a relaxing weekend.
I went to Cal Poly as well. Nomsh hit most of the biggies, but I'll add a couple.
Firestone Grill in downtown is a must. Try their tri-tip sandwich or ABC burger and get some fries. Montana de Oro state park is amazing and is a great place to wander around for short hikes. Sylvester's in Los Osos on the way to Montana de Oro has some amazing burgers.
If you're heading to Avila and want a more scenic drive than the freeway, take Prefumo Canyon Road. It takes a bit but if the weather is nice it's pretty awesome and takes you by one or two of the farms Nomsh mentioned. Map this one out before you go though, as there are a couple turns and it's not hard to get lost.
If you like beer, Firestone has a brewery in Paso Robles that has a tasting room and does tours. Call the day before if you want a tour though as their tour times are odd. Their are also wineries in SLO itself in addition to North County. The Edna Valley region has some good ones.
If the weather is nice Morro Bay on the way to Hearst Castle has kayak rentals.
Man, I need to go visit SLO again.
