Weird ass noises coming from nowhere?

I was gaming on my PC today and heard some odd sounds, so I walked upstairs thinking my dishwasher was going nuts or something...nope, the cycle was done. But I could hear the noise still. Sounded kinda mechanical ish? Hard to describe really. It sounded like it was coming from somewhere inside the house. Walked around downstairs, couldn't figure it out so I stepped outside.

I could hear it even louder outside, and I could not figure out where it was coming from. My neighbour stepped out onto her balcony next door as well and just looked at me and was all "What the hell is that?" The sound was kinda coming from everywhere. It stuck around for a good 2 hours before quieting off. What the heck causes this? It was completely bizarre, I couldn't see any construction or anything and it was around 8pm. Anyone know what kind of machine or whatever could cause this weird noise? I wish I could have recorded it.

Was it similar to any of these?

There have been lots of reports from all over the damn place of people hearing noises that sound like they're coming from the sky, I chalk some up to viral marketing for God knows what, but some seem like a legitimate atmospheric or Earth-based phenomenon. Maybe something geomagnetic or whatnot. There's tons of reports on them, so you should look into it and see if any of them are similar to what you heard.

Sounds like someone is playing the sounds planets make. Probably astronomers trolling people. :rotate:

You can find planet sounds all over youtube.

I heard something like in the videos this morning at about 6 AM-ish in western Tennessee.

I assumed it was a truck or something.

    Freaky?

Err I have also hear those odd noises last week, I'm in the UK. I thought it was an aeroplane or something but couldn't see anything. I also thought I was going mental, maybe we're all going mental.

If your complex is near a telephone pole or other carrier of electrical wire, you might've been hearing the transformer buzzing. It happens sometimes to the one on the corner near my building, although not loudly enough that I hear it inside.

Did it sound non-stop for 2 hours or off and on for 2 hours?

I noticed that every single clip in that video has a power line in it. So I went looking:

So it's probably a power line.

we have underground powerlines where I live so it isn't that. I dont think it was anyone playing sounds from their house either, since it wasn't coming from a specific direction. Also it kind of sounded like the video there....but not quite as noisy. It was more of a groaning sound. Just totally weirded me out.

Just because it's underground in your neighborhood doesn't mean there aren't power lines somewhere within hearing range. And those green boxes at the road can make noise.

edit: And I found a video that covers some other videos I found:

Love cicadas. That's such a common sound around here in the summer, that I don't think people even hear them anymore :P

Yeah that insect sound happens often around here. I doubt it was that. That's a very distinct sound.

We don't have these this far north.

Also that power line stuff is pretty interesting actually.

    Likely this.

Or, as in my neighborhood, one of the homes has a very noisy outdoor hot tub. I can hear it when they fire it up in the summer. It's a low, steady rumble. I was really confused as to what it was until I walked by their home and it finally clicked.

Even ones that are normally quiet can make horrible noises the first time they're turned on after sitting dry all winter. My neighbors thought I'd had a lawnmower accident when I turned my pond filter on this year, loud grinding noise followed by a gurgling and then what sounded like a leaky air duct for a half hour or so until the canister was flooded.
