Ubuntu 9.10 server issues

I have this SSH server that suddenly won't go on the network anymore. It has a static IP set up...I can't seem to ping anything at all.

The only clue that I seem to have right now is this:
Restarting openntpd: invoke-rc.d: initscript openntpd, action "force-reload" failed.
run-part: /etc/network/if-up.d/openntpd exited with return code 1

which comes up when I do an /etc/init.d/networking restart

Can anyone suggest anything for me to try? This is driving me crazy.

Nothing special. I get the usual "restarting OpenBSD Secure Shell server sshd" message, an [OK], but I still can't see other machines on the network.

I don't think it's a problem with ssh or ntpd, those seem more like symptoms.

I'd recommend troubleshooting based on a loss of network connectivity. See if another host can connect using that cable/switchport, make sure the connectivity indicator light(s) are indicating connection, check your software settings, maybe add a PCI/PCIe ethernet card if you have one lying around and see if you can connect using it.

I've been wondering about the hardware facet this morning - unfortunately, I'm at my other job right now and won't be able to check on things until the afternoon. I'm waiting to hear back from the higher-up network guys now as well. The wall jack is fine, and my software settings haven't changed.

Turns out that the problem was upstream from us in the network. It's been resolved now. :|
