I am thinking of buying a moped to use for going back and forth to school, I would just like some advice or recommendations and also, help to choose a good model.
Another question is can mopeds be taken in cross country trips, say If I wanted to take it on the road and such?

Get an old Vespa scooter if you can, they last forever.
I got one from 1979 which is still running fine.
I guess you could take a moped on a cross-country trip. I'm not sure what kind of speed they can sustain though and for how long. Also, I'm pretty sure they are prohibited on interstates.
They are typically prohibited on larger roads (divided highways). Some scooters can achieve speeds of up to about 80-90 km/h, though I don't know for mopeds specifically.
I know 3 people directly who own scooters, and their scooters do not go over 50mph. I'm wondering if that Wikipedia article is splitting hairs between scooters and mopeds.
Still, the 50mph is a maximum and only achievable if the rider is particularly light and it's not going uphill. My aunt scoots around on one and she's lucky if she gets to 35mph, although she weights about 300lbs.
So, great for getting around town, if you have the money to spend.
The times I have been woken up by the screech of a cheap, unrestricted moped engine. Then you get to watch them being over taken by bicycles, pedestrians, old women in wheelchairs, etc.
