Question about HD channels

So if I have an HDTV with tuner I should be able to pick up all the broadcast channels in HD (ie, abc, nbc, and such) without having to pay extra to the cable company, right?

Depending on where you live, there may not be any local stations broadcasting in HD, in which case you may not be able to watch the big network channels in HD no matter what you do. But if your local broadcasters do use HD, you can connect an HDTV with an HD tuner to an antenna to receive those stations.

Well the thing is, when I first got my HDTV four months ago I was able to watch all the major network HD channels. But last week for some reason I couldn't get the channels anymore. I also don't have an antenna.

Get a cheap antenna... I could pick up 0 digital channels without one, and all but Fox with one. Fox near me and it's lower power station. :(

You either need to get HD service from your cable company (usually has networks+PBS+a few others and costs around $15 extra on your cable bill,) or get an HD antenna (which has the possiblity of picking up networks+PBS.)

This site is pretty awesome. It will tell you what kind of antenna you need and which way to point it.

Most cable companies seperate the local channels into HD and SD versions. the Hd versions are usually near the top of the channel numbers.
