So my friend's 360's DVD drive broke

I'm just gonna quote him from Stack:
So a couple years ago my DVD drive on my 360 crapped out. Out of warranty and lacking cash I decided to find someone on craigslist to fix it. They did, for super cheap, however they replaced my drive with a non stock drive. This wasn't a problem until I booted up my 360 after a long period of gaming inactivity. I can't install the updates because it detects my non-stock drive, meaning I can't play any new games. I want to fix this. Cause it sucks.

I've googled the hell out of it but can't figure out which stock drive I need for my particular 360 model and was wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me. Or in the very least point my in the right direction.

The relevant data:

MFR Date - 2006 01 25

Serial - 4131705 60405

Product ID - 77093441413170570405

I appreciate any help.

So yea, the new drive doesn't let him sign into Live, which is seriously cutting into my ME3 co-op time.

Probably gotta salvage a working DVD drive out of an XBOX, i recommend a redringed one, and flash the bios with the new serial number.

If you have access to the old drive it would just be easier to swap the lens assemblies from the drives and not have to do the whole firmware flashing thing.

Here is a decent guide IF you still have the old drive: http://hardandsoftgaming.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/replacing-a-faulty-xbox-360-dvd-drive-firmware-flash-or-circuit-board-transplant/

If you DONT have the old drive..... start looking for a new Xbox360

Balls, he doesn't have the old drive. Is there no way to definitively identify which replacement drive he should get?

nope because the mainboard on the xbox knows which specific drive was installed from the factory. Not just the brand but the individual drive that was installed in that specific xbox.
No original drive to pull the code from...... no easy way to do it. You can hack the xbox 3 ways to Sunday to possibly make it work but it's not easy and there is no room for error.

It is probably the dumbest thing about Xbox hardware design.

Well, you know, one of them, at any rate.
