Starting this thread to see how many would be interested and capable of joining a play by post game of this. As far as we know there is no online app, so it would be running off of everyone's physical board. I would be more than willing to host.
Samurai Swords/Shogun was an entry in the old Gamemasters series along with Axis & Allies and Fortress America. Taking place in feudal Japan, it features a similar combat mechanic where units have a different "hit" value where each hit kills an enemy.
That is where all similarities end.
The strategic portion is like a kick ass version of Risk. Starting positions are placed exactly like Risk. What follows then is each player secretly allocating their money for the turn on a ton of options:
Turn order: Players bid on who gets to go when. Highest bid gets to chose first, ties get drawn randomly.
Fortification: Fortify certain areas with forts and castles.
Units: Standard unit purchases.
Mercenaries: Players can hire mercenary Ronin for the turn. Although an awful long term investment compared to regular units, they have the advantage of quickly and secretly boosting an existing army without the usual "one unit per region" placement restrictions.
Ninja!: Fun fun fun. The player who bid the highest gets to hire the ninja for a turn. They can attempt to assassinate an enemy general, paralyzing that army for a turn and resetting its experience level back to 1. Since the most powerful force in the game is a high level general (imagine the power of an Axis & Allies army that can attack 4 consecutive times a turn rather than only 1), bidding for the ninja becomes vital and out of control. Only the highest bidder hires him, everyone else gets nothing and still loses their money! Hilarity ensues if everyone ties; no one gets anything and the ninja walks off with all their money!
Rules. This is actually a summary that is much more elegant than the clunky manual.
If you ever wanted to like A&A but quickly got bored from the static sameness of every game, then I highly recommend this. Anyone who already owns a physical copy and would be interested in a post game that I can host, speak up.

Those yahoo game groups are hardcore. Don't think I'm anywhere near the optimum strategy level those guys are at.
I think I read that one person here definitely has a physical copy? If the site ever comes up again, how many would be interested in joining that group for a game?
The ZunTzu game client looks like it has a Samurai Swords module available. I mistakenly said it was Vassal in the board game thread. I've never used the Samurai Swords/Ikusa model, but ZunTzu usually works pretty well for wargames.
