iMovie refuses to render effects.

I'm trying to apply video effects to a few clips. They work in the preview, and all the settings make changes in real-time like normal, but when I click "Apply", the clips stay exactly the same. I've tried several different effects and clips, and they're all doing the same thing. The only thing I can think of is that the project I'm working on is on my external HD. Either way, this is extremely frustrating. Any ideas?
Edit: Okay, iMovie will render things if the file is on the internal HD. How can I get it to work with the external HD?
