I think the reason I prefer P3 is the same reason most people like P4.

P4 makes levity of everything. Nothing bad happens except to people you never meet or care about (Or in the OMG TWIST the one person you probably want dead anyway.)

P4 social links are pretty much about nothing. Oh woe I have to run an inn-- Oh lol nevermind I'll do it kk. Oh woe I'm popular trololol. Oh woe I like to punch people BUT I NEED TO KNOW WHY I NEED TO PUNCH PEOPLE OH WAIT I CAN PUNCH THEM BECAUSE PUNCH PUNCH LOLOLOL.

The only reasonably interesting ones were Adachi, Dojima and Nanako. The rest were basically straight out of a joke episode of Friends or something.

P3 is more about depression, divorces, death, revenge, abuse, abandonment, etc. I find it more interesting

p4 is about high school problems

and as the majority of us are adults, we can all recognize that high school problems are dumb bullshit that don't mean anything

and at the end of most of the social links, the cast of p4 recognizes that high school problems are dumb bullshit

Persona 3 is also about anime robots and a cast of characters who don't really act like plausible people. Akihiko, Mitsuru, they're really more archetypes than fully realized persons.

And then of course there's the issue of almost nobody in Persona 3 except Junpei really acting anything close to their age.

Persona 4 is about self deception, the illusions we willingly buy into to our own detriment, and overcoming these things in order to mature. Not just high school bullshit.

There is definitely high school bullshit though.

P4 is more consistantly good On social links and characters. P3 has higher highs and lower lows IMO.

I think that's a good way of putting it. P3 has a larger scale(i.e. 'get to Tartarus or WE ALL DIE'), but P4 makes you feel pretty damn awful if you get that phone call because you were too late.

Oh yeah, the Jungian lectures made the final villain make a tad more sense to me.
Izanagi, swimming in the Jungian collective conscious of humanity, is deriving conclusions from the worst common denominator. And like Malorie from Inception, she doesn't give a fuck what people say, think, or do. She only cares what they feel and treats it like the word of god.

Also, does Shinji's survival in P3P address the med thing?

    P3:P4::DS:DS2

    Kind of.

I think DS and DS2 are like night and day, tonally. Like, DS may be one of the darkest games I've ever played. DS2 is much more happy-go-lucky.

P3 is rather dire. I mean the whole concept is just dire, and most of the social links are depressing as hell. P4 is more...uplifting in so many ways. There are some very sad things in the game, and every interaction with Nanako makes me choke up (in a positive way) but overall it's much more lighthearted. Not as night and day as DS to DS2, but still - it's a shift.

I like both games, though, just as I like DS and DS2. I appreciate the more lighthearted tone in P4. I loved P3, but some of the social links are just upsetting. P4's links may be a bit more flighty, but whatever. The characters are still very well developed.

Justice is so apt for Nanako...

Where is her justice in this cold uncaring universe?

Well, I am completely incapable of taking down Polaris in DS 2. The third stage just wipes out my group every time, and I want to guarantee the next team will do better instead of sending the same team in and hoping it works out (I managed to halfway kill it by suiciding a physical team that all reflected physical right next to it and punching the crap out of it, but then I never got another turn because I was surrounded by demons).

That isn't much different then the whole Erberus/Nyx thing though.
I mean P3 is pretty much completely about people simply losing the desire to exist in this uncaring and rotten world, and the world just happened to have a mechanism to resolve the problem! The fact that you have to later beat the face in of the physical manifestation of humanities self-loathing. Again not so much in an individual sense as simply the whole of humanity being generally miserable on an emotional level. Which is entirely depressing when you think about how true it kind of is these days.

I wish everyone would stop picking on Yosuke. :(

Yosuke is a homophobic, sexist creep*. He deserves to be picked on.

*being a teenager isn't a good defense for this. Yosuke is a great character, but a terrible person. That's what makes him such a good character.

You give him too much credit. This is Japan's idea of comedy.

Argh.. I want to play Persona 3 FES, but my PS2 is super busted.
P3P takes away so much, that I don't think I can play it after the awesomeness that was P4G.

  • chocoboliciouschocobolicious Registered User regular
    I prefer P3 to P4 but I still don't think I could replay P3:FES after P4G.

Being able to pick your fusion skill results is /fantastic/ and I don't know if I can ever go back. X>X>X>O>O never again.

One of the things I like the most about Persona 4 & P4G is that your allies are actually helpful. In Persona 3, all of your allies get pretty ordinary abilities making the main character drastically more powerful than anyone else. In Persona 4, the main character is still really powerful, but they gave your allies much better skill sets as well as useful secondary abilities through S-Links like follow-up attacks & being able to endure a mortal blow once per battle. And then in Persona 4 Golden, they upped things even further with additional new abilities to the point where you actually have to make hard decisions on which 8 abilities you want to end up with for most of the characters.

Homophobic sexist teenagers aren't exactly exclusive to Japan.

For the record, I'm more bothered by his occasionally dickish attitude toward Kanji, since Kanji is a serious bro. Possibly the broiest of bros.

As for his lusting for women, at least he makes occasionally thoughtful efforts to find a girlfriend, in addition to his occasionally creepy methods.

Yosuke probably buys used panties from vending machines. And with that, this iteration of the thread comes to a close.
