A lot of us here love animation, but I've found that a lot of time the discussion is limited to American and Japanese cartoons

This thread is intended to redress that inadequacy

Please use it to talk about your favorite animation from outside those countries

There's a good chance the rest of us might not have heard of it and will discover something new to enjoy!

I'll get the ball rolling with Russian (or, more accurately, Soviet) animation, which I grew up with and am very fond of. Because Soviet animation studios were supported by the government, they were able to operate without recourse to the profit motive. As a result, they produced many incredibly original and beautiful. Cartoons from the most fruitful period of the 1960s and 1970s are still beloved today and a part of Russian culture. Here are some of my favorites, with english subtitles where possible.

Nu, Pogodi! / Ну, погоди! (You Just Wait!)

Nu, Pogodi is probably the most accessible series to a Western audience, as very little is said. Operating on a Tom & Jerry dynamic, the cartoon follows the misadventures of the Wolf (Volk) as he attempts to catch and eat the Hare (Zayats).

Film Film Film / Фильм, фильм, фильм

A satire of the film-making process, and also nearly completely silent.

Vinni-Puh / Винни-Пух (Winnie the Pooh)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqdiEUp6s4E

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qam9JBk5Oig

Far superior to the Disney version, FACT

Yozhik v tumane - ёжик в тумане (Hedgehog in the Fog)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRsXU4Q6a0Q

Straight up one of the most beautiful cartoons ever made, Hedgehog in the Fog is the surreal and touching adventure of a hedgehog (Yozhik) who gets lost on his way to visit his friend the bear cub.

Bremenskie Muzikanti / Бременские музыканты (The Bremen Town Musicians)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxHjqYmIpIE
the last 2/3 of this are available with subtitles here and here

My all-time favorite. Based on the fairy tale, the Russian version is a musical that melds together the traditional elements of the story with modern influences to create something really magical.

Malish i Karlson / Малыш и Карлсон (Junior and Karlsson)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA0gzYiGczU
first 10 minutes available with subtitles here

Adapted from the Swedish series, this cartoon is about a small man with a propeller on his back who lives on a roof and befriends a boy living in the apartment below him.

Cheburashka / Чебурашка

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlLd3Yf0eio

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeZMPoZrMss

A great example of stop-motion animation. Cheburashka is a small furry creature who accidentally ends up in Russia, where he befriends and goes on adventures with a crocodile named Gena.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you guys like these videos I have many more to share. Now share something that you love and we've never heard of!
