Proposing in Seattle

Greetings Penny Arcadians, I'll be taking a vacation in Seattle with my girlfriend this June. We're both new to the city, and I've only been there for PAX so my travel was limited to and from my hotel and the convention center. I'm trying to find a place that would be kind of private yet scenic to pop the question. We're both not big fans of large crowds, especially large crowds of strangers to share that moment with. We're staying at the Edgewater hotel so anything close to their would also be great.

If you're familiar with the area and have a good idea in mind please share. Thanks!

If I were you, I'd try and get a table in that restaurant that rotates at the top of the Space Needle.

But that one might be a little hard to book.

Gasworks Park is kind of nice and you can just walk around until there aren't people around.

You're in luck--Six Seven is in the Edgewater.

For another picturesque alternative, Kerry Park is brilliant and close by.

Good tips. I'll add that he suggests Kerry Park because it's up on Queen Anne and has a great view of downtown and Puget Sound.

spoilered for huge, panoramic pic from Kerry Park

Kerry Park is amazing. I make a habit of taking it in every time I'm in Seattle.

Maybe the Olympic Sculpture Park? It's just a couple of blocks from the Edgewater

It's a bit of a schlep (10-15 blocks from the hotel, I think), but the waterfall garden in Pioneer Square would probably be a decent choice.

It's relatively secluded, and usually pretty empty.

Oh, and if you're willing to go a bit further afield, up to Volunteer Park there's a cool sculpture in front of the Asian Art Museum that has a beautiful view of the city:

If it's a nice day, though, it may be kinda crowded. You could catch a taxi there, though, and just use the excuse that you want to visit the Asian Art Museum (which isn't a bad idea, anyway). There's a cool conservatory there, too.

Clearly the most romantic solution is to propose to her in front of the Gum Wall.

But seriously, Kerry Park. Or Viretta if you're huge Nirvana fans.

As far as sights go, you can't really beat Kerry or the Space Needle. But (and this is just my two cents) I've heard from friends and family that the restaurant at the top of the Needle is overrated regarding quality of food. Kinda like Cloud 9 here in Vancouver.

The food is certainly overrated, but the view and ambiance are top notch. Since I think ambiance is really what he's going for, it's an option.

You could also come to Portland and propose to her with a view of Mount Hood in the background. It's only 350 miles south! Seriously though, good luck the proposal.

The Stranger did a review of it a year or two ago, where they upgraded it from their previous review of "ridiculously expensive and awful" to "ridiculously expensive and thoroughly mediocre."

You guys have been super helpful! Kerry Park looks awesome and I imagine it would look rather nice at sunset as well. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Also if you're thinking of proposing over dinner with a beautiful backdrop, another great option is Ray's Boathouse in Ballard. It's further from downtown but it's right on Puget Sound and has a gorgeous view during sunset. They also do great seafood.

The nights can still get pretty chilly in June once the sun's down, but if you want to eat on the balcony they'll even bring you blankets if you get cold. But sitting inside by a window will generally be more intimate and classier than the balcony.

You're at a good hotel to start with, they've got a great view from the restaurant and bar.

Kerry Park is the obvious choice, although there are also the ferries to Bainbridge Island which is about a 30 minute ride each way and has a great view of the city. Proposals have happened on them before.

Screw the Space Needle. We ate there for Halloween a year or so ago and it was truly mediocre, other than meeting Malcolm McDowell (and this can't be guaranteed, it's not like he works there or anything) nothing else was really memorable.

If it were me, I'd also consider Discovery Park, take the entrance on the south end of Magnolia, but you'd want a car for that.

Ray's is nice (food is really good - I eat there semi-frequently), but it's in Ballard and you'd need a car/taxi at the least and it's a 25-35 minute trip from downtown if you don't hit much traffic. If you do decide to go to Ray's in Ballard and it's a nice night, then consider Golden Gardens park a short walk away. It's not very big but they've got a nice view and a nice little beach. You can occasionally see whales and seals from here.

I can't comment much on what Thanatos said, but Pioneer Square tends to contain a fair number of vagrants and junkies as it's near the missions and needle exchanges. Beautiful area of town but it can be sketchy.

If you take the water taxi over to Alki Beach in West Seattle, they've got a nice waterfront and a great view. Might be worth considering, some other folks might have some suggestions on lounges and restaurants over there.

Ye Olde Curiosity Shop is a tacky tourist trap shop on the waterfront. I guess if that's the kind of place you want to propose then go for it, but that seems like a really dubious recommendation.

You could take her there and buy a really tacky plastic ring and then act like you're going to put it on her finger and then pull out the real deal (I'm talking about the ring, killer).

  • DruhimDruhim Registered User, ClubPA regular
Yeah..problem is you'd still be in a tacky tourist trap surrounded by tourists buying kitschy crap.

Haha, I'll be sure to avoid Ye Olde kitschy trap. Thanks for the advice about the sketchy areas. This is the kind of stuff that's good to know. Here in Colorado some of our nicest city parks are also full of junkies and stuff, so thanks for the heads up on that. Again guys, thanks for the suggestions. I'd have no clue having not really explored the area.
