Guitar Pickups

Hi guys.

I'm considering replacing the stock pickups in my Ibanez AX-120.

It has two humbuckers in the neck and bridge position.

I'm looking for a set (or combo of two different ones) that'll lend themselves well to rhythm playing, but, suffice for leads as well.

My budget is around $150 for the pair, but it'd be nice to go lower.

I appreciate any suggestions.

The DiMarzio Bluesbucker is a pretty good pickup, and you can pick up a set for around 100 if you look hard enough. I've also heard good things about the DiMarzio Activator, but I've never heard one in person. What type of music are you going to be playing on it?

    I appreciate the suggestion.

I currently have the stock AH pickups that Ibanez put in it's AX line at the time. From what I know, they're decent for metal or punk. I'm by no means an expert, though...

My musical tastes have changed somewhat, and I really prefer cleaner/slightly distorted tones vs. a full-on roar. I'm really enjoying some of the recent New Order CD "Waiting for the Sirens Call," if that makes any sense. However, I enjoy "wall of sound" shoegazing stuff as well, where multiple guitars are layered on top of each other.

I'll check out your suggestion...the price sounds right.

I just bought a Brooklyn pickup from GFS. Its pretty good. Theyve got some other stuff in their Retrotron lineup that look pretty neat. Im considering replacing the buckers on my Jagmaster with these:

They sound like they may possibly be something youre looking for. Theyve got sample mp3s up there to check out.

I've not compared a ton of different humbuckers, but I've found Seymour Duncan SH-5 "duncan custom" pickups are versatile enough to do lead and rhythm.

I appreciate all of the suggestions...I'll be sure to check them out.

As for wiring. I have basic soldering experience...anyone ever replace pickups? If so, is it fairly basic soldering/wiring work?

It's very easy. Usually only three or four points, nice fat wires. You just need a fair amount of wattage because there's usually a LOT of solder back there.

Not sure what kinda music your going to be playing, but so far EMG's have really impressed me when playing a more metal or distorted sound.
